I suppose it's a bit much charging for a video clip that people could just have taped themselves for free. On the otherhand, it makes it available to people who didn't have a chance to see the performance.

Still, I wonder who actually owns a musical performance on a tv show? I would have thought the tv channel commissioning the show own it, after all, they pay for all the cameras and everything. Does Prince actually own it to sell it?!

A lot of fans criticised this performance, saying it was far too watered down with other performers other than Prince. But I think that is to miss the point, the award show was about people who inspire, and while showcasing the people who Prince has influenced (Sheila E. The Time) it also gave a nod to the people who inspired Prince (Aretha Franklin, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana - what was that song that guy sang? Either a James Brown or Stevie Wonder song I think...).

Exactly. Too many obsessed dickheads around here miss the point entirely.

What a joke. This had to have been the most stale, lame, unfunky performance Prince has done in years!

though one of sheila's best moments on live television ever. for me, her moment in the spotlight at the end of the performance is totally the money shot of the whole thing.

I was watching this last night...I was sorta ho hum...then they played Housequake eek (though an ok version at that...but still HOUSEQUAKE eek ) Then the Time came on...WHAAA eek ...Then Miss Sheila E came on (la la la la) eek eek eek . That was the best part. SHe can play really good..and looks good too. Seeing her play was worth the 1.77...probably 3 times that much.

That and the Controversy Live have been 2 of the best things I have gotten from there.

Exactly. I mean this is a TV performance at a black tie affair. I wasn't expecting what I got.

i really think that if they're gonna offer stuff that you can find elsewhere for free and that you can only play on your PC, they should just toss the clip in the cyberclips room and let members of NPGMC watch it for free.

i'm not big on purchasing video files anyway, i never look at 'em. i want stuff i can put on my digital music player and listen to at work, at the gym, on the subway, etc. when i watch stuff, i'm usually sacked out in bed with a bowl of cereal or something. it's no fun watching a prince performance on a computer.

but people must be buyin' it or else they wouldn't keep offering it. shrug

When you buy the Vanguard clip over at NPGMC, do you get video AND audio files or just a video file?

Well you can download a DVD compliant HDTV widescreen version from ABMP that is 1.5 GB and absolutely awesome quality - for free. There's also 2 lossless versions of the audio there to choose from, again for free.
But hey, it's up to you.

I agree with your view on this. I'll take it a step further and say, regardless of who owns the TV performance, from an ethical standpoint and perhaps for the good of promoting "the Club", Prince should've made the Vanguard performance available for free. Anyone living in the U.S. or with a satellite feed could've seen and recorded the performance for free, so why charge your fans? He's charging people for the convenience of putting it on-line? That's ridiculous!

Message to Prince: Please quit trying to milk your fans. Put the Vanguard video in the "free" video section of the NPGMC.

If you saw and recorded the performance for free--good for you. Watch your free copy. However, if you desperately want to see it and don't want to scour the fan sites to find it---it's VERY convenient to pony up the money to view it. If you don't want to pay, and didn't work to have it free in the 1st place, then quit complaining. It's a choice- not a scam.

Of course if I don't want to pay, I won't pay. That's simple. That is a given. But just because I have the "choice" to pay or not pay doesn't mean I cannot or should not voice my opinion. So I guess I would throw your comment right back in your face and say "if you're happy paying for something that is essentially free" then don't worry about anyone else complaining - be happy paying for what you get.

Was it broadcast in HDTV? Because if it wasn't, the qualities not going to improve any scaling it up for High Definition. Besides, 1.5GB for a 12 minute performance? That's a bit much, it could easily be reduced down with no noticeable loss of quality. This clip isn't that good that I want to spend all day downloading it!

Lets put it this way - watching the HDTV version on a pc is as clear as watching on a TV - it really is rather good. (It's from FOX9 KMSP, and is almost 17 minutes with the intro, acceptance speech and performance.)
I agree about the performance, though.

But you got to think of it this way, many people dont have the time to wait for that big of a file to load on there computer and watch it then have to wait for it to load again in the future. $1.77 is a small price to pay to only have to download it once and be able to watch it whenever you want. Even 1.99 is a good price 4 all u NON-members. SUPPORT PRINCE, SHEILA E., ECT DONT STEAL THERE MUSIC ESPICALLY WHEN ITS SO DANG CHEEP!!!!!

i don't intend on 'stealing' anything, but since i already taped the awards show a few weeks back, i don't feel the need to pay two bucks for something i can only watch on my computer, when i already have a version of it on tape that i can watch on my big ol' tv set.

this doesn't appeal to me, and i don't think it's a particularly good deal. one man's trash is another man's treasure. go figure. shrug
