the family live I was just blessed w/ a copy of them live at 1st ave and it is really strange.I mean, the band was tight. They had a lot of forced choreography and hipness, but the band was very tight. St Paul looks like a prince-ified barry manilow, but i was impressed that his vocals sounded just like on the record.I really think they should have recorded more. They left something to be worked out on stage ,but that is no indictment on their skills. It was just kinda' a raw start. There was a little bit of surreality for me because I have listened to that band for years and could never picture them live. Now,I see what they were. I had heard a little of them live because I have the rehearsal cd and that playing is tight.
Now,part 2 of this "gift"(from a generous orger!)is a mix of several paisley park videos.Oh,man this is some bananas classic shit! There is "mia bocca" and "mountains" and a couple of w&l vids!!I forgot how beautiful wendy is!!Lisa was pretty, too.Wendy looks great, though!!Those dark features and her even porcelain skin are a knockout. Her guitar is beautiful,as well. Overall, this has really made my day.Good, good stuff!!Oh,and the copy of Jill Jones really take you there. What a really well done album by prince and co. It is one of the most sensible cd's evr out from anyone in his camp.It all makes a picture and nothing sounds out of place.Prince and Jill did an excellent job with that album!! I always liked The Family's "River Run Dry". St. Paul and Susannah are incredible. They sounded great singing River Run Dry on that concert DVD.

o.m.g. - they were really bad performing live - THANK GOODNESS for the studio!!!! i LOVE the Family's album - one of my all time favorites! but boy was i disappointed to see them live after all these years . . . i had them on a pedestal that quickly crumbled . . . oh well. i did however think that Susannah sounded much better at the Family Jamm recently. . . and i'm glad to see they lost the silk jammie look!!!!
even though i complain - i am happy to have been able to see this footage, 20 years later . . . so i should just hush [Edited 3/14/05 8:13am] music is its own reward - Sting

I do know.It was just a trip to watch it.It's something I thought I'd never see. They were fantastic in the studio ,but I don't know how Prince was gonna make them better live. He was gonna need a LOT more time with them.I have the one rehearsal cd.I'd love to hera some of the other rehearsals where Prince, undoubtedly, must've been cursing them out! The Family was far from The Time. The Family was one of Prince's weakest groups. St. Paul was downright embarrassing. [Edited 3/20/05 16:18pm] Andy is a four letter word.

After the Family Jamm I remember being really impressed with the Family. For a band that only played together once, it seemed clear they'd put a lot of attention and professionalism into pulling off the show, and they were clearly having a campy good time. (Not to mention the look on Doyle Bramhall's face, but that's another story!)

It was a little rough but most of the shows I have seen at 1st Avenue have been. It is good viewing though. [Edited 3/28/05 11:58am]
