Vanity 6 could have been as good as the MaryJane girls I read the What does Prince think of britney Spears thread and I had to laugh. Prince is the one who put out no talent bimbos like Vanity, Apollonia, Carmen Electra and Cat Glover(who didn't even have looks going for her, with her teeth grinding song ruining raps on Alphabet Street and Cindy C.)
If Prince had made Jill Jones (shadow singer for Vanity 6) the lead singer of Vanity 6 (Jill 6?) that group could have been something. Nobody in the MJ girls could sing except JoJo. You see it's all about the lead singer. I think Brenda(the unspoken true lead singer of Apollonia 6) had a cool voice and could have done the lead on a few tracks with Jill being the primary lead singer. The minnapolis type funk song "automatic" by the Pointer sisters, would have been perfect for Brenda. Susan and Vanity could have been just the backing vocals Oh well, I guess because Prince couldn't fuck Jill, she wasn't the lead or even really in the group. Actually Prince did smash Jill that's why she was around. She was,story goes the inspiration for a "She's always in my hair". Why she wasn't the lead singer probably because Prince had yet gain the "jump on the bandwagon, 5 albums deep of fans Purple Rain brought". He was primarily popular with the Africian- American community. The pop community only knew of "1999"and "Little Red..."
"Nasty Girl" was huge hit on r&b radio. I've never seen a Vanity 6 video on mtv. Not a 1. I have thanks to BET seen all 3 of the videos they've made. MTV then is not like how it is now. | |

[Edited 2/8/05 14:59pm] Yeah...right...Prince is a living legend and the foremost musical genius of our time - but he needs tips on his side projects from a fan. Vanity 6 worked - even without the talent - because they were hot. It was the beginning of the video age in the early 80s and Vanity was the best looking chick anywhere - hands down. She did have to know how to sing. (Jill Jones wouldnt have been a much better improvement in my opinion. She aint exactly Chaka Khan on her first solo album - with Prince - so the vulgar "screw" concept holds no water). And Vanity's singing actually improved on her subsequent solo releases (with some production help) and it was at least as good as the crap that passes for singing today (ie. Spears, Janet, Stefani, and all the rap garbage). And what was wrong with Cat's looks? She was no raving beauty like Vanity but she was attractive and her body was great. [Edited 2/25/05 8:12am] | |
