Was this just me or do you think in the movie Glitter the charecter Silk was totally inspired by Vanity? The lady even looked like her, though Vanity sings a bit better.

yes totally. If you listen to the director's commentary he says the were specifically looking for someone like that (or something to that effect...). He mentions vanity by name if I recall.

He talks about how they auditioned tons of women and none were quite right, able to pull off the confidence of wqalking around in lingerie etc. but the woman who played it was a model and she just came in and I think he said she was dressed very vanity-like in the audition and she totally ahd hte right attitude.

Her name is Padma Lakshmi.

She recently married to Salman Rushdie.
