Maceo Parker in NYC last night (12/30) I shared the following post on the "Prince" forum because I thought he would be playing at Maceo's concert last night. I realize it is probably more appropriate for here....
"On a lark, I checked local events and saw that Maceo Parker was doing a show at Irving Plaza the time my train was to get in (8pm). Naturally I got giddy as hell, thinking that there is no way the Prince wouldn't stop by and play at some point during the evening. Man, I was stoked. I wish I had a fellow Prince friend to accompany me. Anyway, let me just tell you that (after arriving 1 1/2 hours late) Maceo turned it out! I mean, he tore the place up. I have to tell you that I only know about him through his association with Prince, though I realize he is quite a legend in his own right. There were a lot of people there and, curiously, many college-aged folks who were really into him. His audience was truly mixed age, gender, and ethnicity-wise. He teased us a bit by saying "I have a special friend playing with us tonight from ...(pause) Boston" or "from (pause) Minneapolis." That last time he was referring to his keyboard player (I didn't catch his name). This guy played a brief Purple Rain solo. They also performed "Baby Knows" but changed it to "Daddy Knows." It was great. Like I said, he rocked the house, but with each encore I was waiting for our friend to make an appearance. After 3 or 4 encores, he left for good. It was a great time, but I was disappointed. It was about 1am now, but I saw that some of the band members were shaking hands with lingering fans. So, I went up to the keyboardist and asked why his fellow Minnesotan didn't make an appearance. He said that if he were in town he definitely would have. He asked me who told me that they were in town and I said prince.org. He told me that he spoke with Prince's people this evening and that they're in LA recording. I asked if Maceo would be working with Prince on his next project and tour and he told me that he would be. It was a fun evening." Come here, babe.. yeah... | |
