I remember hearing an old early 90's song by a duo called Natural Selection. At the time I was 12, naive and thought it was Pricne. and it wasn't half bad.

I downloaded it yesterday. Well, it still sounds alot LIKE prince but u know it ain't for sure!

The lyrics, the innuendo and the camille-esque voice...its still not a half-bad song..
Has anyone heard it?

Hi! I've just heard this song, I think if you listen to it once you will think its Prince, but listing to it twice I think you can hear that its not him..
I guess that if I heard it on the radio I'd thought it was him too! But Thanks for letting me know, because I'm sure if I didn't know about this I'd probably think it was him too!

Anyone remember the first time they heard "Oh Sheila" by Ready For The World? That band was royally jockin' Prince. I never thought it was Prince, but I thought it might be one of his side projects. Silly.

I remember this song! In the fall of 1991,this song was a smash hit.My sister called me one day and said "Turn on the radio,they're playing Prince's new song!".I turned it on,and Natural Selection's "I'll Do Anything" was on.It does sound "Princely",but vocally,the lead singer sounds more like Jesse Johnson.

Doesn't the woman in the song do a little rap of her own at the end,where she says "Make it smooth to the groove like sandwich spread"? Cool song,dumb lyrics.

Good lord 91'? i was 10 and yeah i remember this but i dont remember it sounding like prince.

I went out and bought the CD of this when I first heard it 'cos I wasn't sure whether it was Prince or not (Can't believe it was really '91 - time sure does fly when your having fun!!)

But up till now I never realised that Ingrid Chavez was the female vocals on it - she is not credited on the CD single I've got.

What ever happened to the band? Did they produce anything else worthwhile listening to??

I'll go to my GRAVE believing that that song was by Prince or that it was Prince. When the song was released, they removed Ingrid from it, I think. Anyway, it's Prince goshdarnit!!!

Later, I think they released the single properly and on their album and I think Ingrid was gone (and some of the lyrics were changed too).

I discovered this topic quite by accident...Would like to share some inside info to clarify Natural Selection once and for all. Natural Selection was two guys (Elliot and Frederick) who met and got a single on air in Detriot called "Do Anything". The duo relocated to MNPLS for the music scene at the time, I was there too. The song got tons of airplay all over the midwest because it had a Prince sound/flavor. They got a record deal and Ingrid Chavez was borrowed from Paisley to do voice on single for album which hit #2 on Billboard that year. Which was good exposure for her. Album self-titled "Natural Selection"/Atlantic Records. Prince had NOTHING to do with this song or album. Frederick, the singer, has Prince-like tenor & falsetto voice and credits Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Prince and the like for influencing his sound. His range is NOT NEARLY as broad or strong as Prince. When you think about it, he was a pre-cursor to Maxwell and D'Angelo coming on the scene to broaden funk/soul appeal. Album's 2nd single "Hearts don't think", also went to #4 on Billboard. Group toured and broke up before 2nd album. Album still available on cd/lp/cassette, though out of print. I see it all the time on EBAY. Have a great day.
