Bobby Z

stayed friends with Prince after Purple Rain or not really?

Also, do you think he felt overshadowed by the presence of Sheila E and other percussionists on the Purple Rain tour?

Bobby has stayed friends with Prince all along, he has said they don't always talk but when they do it's all good. Bobby joined the mini Revolution reunion in 2000 for the Celebration. He was hanging out with Prince at the soundboard at the Mint Condition show with his son, Fink and Taja. Prince would talk to him and they'd laugh, they truly looked like friends. Although many people have falsely reported Bobby getting dissed by Prince at that show when he said "substitution...Kirk Johnson in for Bobby Z." He was totally kidding around with him and they all were having such a great time, it was not the diss that people have made it out to be. Plus there seems to be a lot of respect towards Bobby from that whole band, they used to call him Dad on the road and they'd go to him with any problems. I think he knew the writing was on the wall with Sheila hanging around but they were all still good friends.

Thanks, I always liked Bobby Z and am glad there hasn't been much animosity as far as he's concerned, also that Prince seemed to respect him.

What I want to know is how he played live with the Linn LM-1.

During the PR tour, it almost looks like he is just playing the cymbals, and the Linn is doing all the kick and snare. But they did all those stop and starts on P's cues so how could he keep it all so tight?

On the Avenue recording, it looks like he he is playing the snare so maybe he was playing pads hooked up ot the machine?

Then on the Parade tour, he seems to play live skins most of the time, with maybe some handclap accents, but is he triggering them or is the machine doing it?

plus on songs like Mountains, or Anotherlover, it seems like it's all a machine pattern playing.

These are the things I ponder. smile

If you look at Bobby Z in the Raspberry Beret video he misses a pad hit. He's supposed to hit the pad behind him but he is definately off beat. It looked awkward and weird. Of course only Prince orgers would catch it. They should've edited the part.

Really? During what line? And I'm assuming it's the accent clap on a 4? A lot of those old videos are off beat though. I was shocked when I watched my videos for UTCM adn the sound seemed off, if you watch their mouths.

I don't know exactly when, I have to look at the video again. The weird thing is that it doesn't look like an edit synch mistake. He looks awkward, like "oh shit I have to hit it now or Prince will deduct $10k from my salary". You know that look of pain that Bobby always had when playing drums.

I have his self titled album from 1989. I didn't know there were others.

This last semester in a history class I took, I was talking to this girl about Prince and she told me she was friends with Bobby Rivkin's daughter, and I was all "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, YOU KNOW BOBBY Z!?"

I think I freaked her out pretty bad. I don't think she was even aware he was called Bobby Z back in the Revolution.

Anyway, didn't he write River Run Dry? That's a great fucking song.

sorry, thats the one I meant. I just checked. song is actually called "the meaning". good song. There is a olvier leibar track on here which is odd. Leibar did "opposites attract" by paula Abdul. St Paul keyboards on most of Leibars tracks. Leibar from minni.....

Leiber was part of Jesse Johnson's group, Ta Mara And The Seen so it's not so odd.

Yes, he wrote "River Run Dry" (the only non-Prince-penned track on the Family album) which is also on his solo album.
As far as I know, this is the ONLY album he put out on his own and it's pretty good.
