Jesse Johnson's Shockadelica

Just when i was going to burn a Jesse Johnson Box Set from all of my vinyl I find SHockadelica @ Borders for $5.00.

I was shocked.

This is an awesome album. It was the best accompaniment to Sign Of the Time's in 86' or 87'

Who else loves this album.

Yes, Shockidelica was a sorely overlooked album. It should have been a bigger hit for Jesse.

This album is a funk classic! Jesse was at the top of his game when he recorded this.Jams like "She (I Can't Resist)","Addiction" and "Burn You Up" are incredibly funky, while his version of "Do Yourself a Favor" is superior to any other version I've heard. He even delivers a brilliant slow jam "Tonight".

worship this album is a mid-80s funk masterpiece

I had on vinyl also. I was a big fan back in the day so I have all of his vinyl releases and 12".

But I found Shockadelica on CD @ Border's. And it was five dollars. I never new there were c.d.'s either. I was shocked.

Drive Yo Cadi is my favorite also, then Free world.

The only problem with Shockadelica is that "Baby Let's Kiss" should have been replaced with the 7" remix. (The 12" version is amazing, but a bit too long to squeeze into the middle of an LP.)

I have to agree! The 12" was much better the the album version by a long shot!!
Jesse's 12" versions allwasy had a little extra punch to them!
I could never get enough of "Better Way". It was a nice into to what was to come on Bare My Naked Soul!

Shockadelica was released on CD back in the day. It was also re-released on CD a couple of years ago on a limited basis.

Crazay has gotta be one of Sly Stone's last appearances. Prince never worked with him, did he?

I always loved Do Yourself a Favor then, ahem, i found out Prince wrote it! And Jesse complained that Prince stole the title Shockadelica from him.

Still, it is a good album, and not just because of a Prince song.

I thought I read that Prince wrote the song 'Shockadelica' to show Jesse that you can't have a great name for an album like that and not follow it up with a title track.

And didn't Pepe Willie write "Do Yourself A Favor"?

You are correct. Pepe Willie Wrote "Do Yourself a favor." Prince didn't write one song on Shockadelica the album. They weren't even on good terms at that time. jesse was kind of upset because prince use to give him music advice that he himself didn't follow.

Although Prince's SHockadelic floors anything on Jesse's album.

I don't think Prince ever worked with Sly but I think he sampled him on MO-Quake the 12" of Housequake.

Special Love is my cut along with I'm Just Wanting You. Both of those songs are like 2 of my favorite slow jam cuts by Jesse.

Yes,there is a version of "Do Yourself A Favor" by Prince. It's from 1982.But he didn't write that song.It was written by Pepe Willie in 1975.On one of those numerous "Minneapolis Genuis/Symbolic Beginning/One Man Jam" compilations, you can even hear the original 1975 version, but it's called "If You See Me" and features lead vocals by Pepe (Prince plays guitar). In the early 80s,Prince took this track, gave it a new arrangement and was planning to have The Time record it,but they never did.So Jesse did his own version in 1986.

Cool. I always thought Pepe Willie sounded like a Prince pseudonym. One day I'll get the Minneapolis Genius cd.
