funny I always thought she was singing about her period too..... I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am

I havent'; gone back and looked at all the verse lyrics as I write this...but my first thoughts are that it's about love.
The water metaphor is like the feelings and emotions you get when you fall in love. First it's lots of emotion (on Wednesday, it's a river). Then it gets even stronger (on thursday it's now a lake...more water than a river). But sometimes it gets overwhelming.....i.e. by Friday she's in an Ocean...tons of water. In fact, it can be too much maybe..... kind of like "drowning in emotion" etc... either cuz it's so intense or because maybe things changed..... you know how super intense relationships can kinda turn really quickly..... so after all that it's like your out in the ocean with no paddle. anyway, those are my thoughts on it. it's a cool song and very un Prince-like, which makes sense since he had nothing to do with it. I always thought Faded Photographs sounded like a Pat Benetar song. Interestingly, the ad lib at the end of Faded Photogs ("1 plus 1 equals 2, 2+2=4 etc.") is also done on the unreleased GirlPower song, which I belive Prince did work on but I'm not sure.
