Khan Off-Key Due to Strained Vocal Chords

NEW YORK - If you thought Chaka Khan sounded a bit off-key during her performance with rapper Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards, you were right.

The R&B diva is blaming strained vocal chords for her screeching performance at Sunday's awards show in Miami.

A statement released Tuesday by her publicist, Brit Reece of PMK/HBH, said Khan had to cancel a performance in Park City, Utah, Friday night because her voice was strained and she was under doctors' orders not to perform.

However, she "received a cortisone shot just hours prior to her VMA performance to honor her commitment to Kanye West."

Reece said the shot helped her a bit, but she still struggled through the performance of "Through the Wire," which contains a sample of Khan's old hit, "Through the Fire."

Reece said Khan's voice has been strained because of intense recording for an upcoming album due out in October.

For now, Khan is resting her voice, not speaking.

"She's supposed to perform this weekend in the Bahamas, and as of now she is going to do it," Reece told The Associated Press. "She's resting her chords completely this week."

Did she have the same same strained vocal chords when she came out and did the off-key screeching during "The Christ" on the Essence awards?

From what I've heard from her in the last few years her voice is gone. It's too bad.

amen to that. Every time Mary J. sings her voice sounds like its been strained when its simply due to her not knowing how to sing really. She makes my ear drums bleed. I'd rather hear a vocally strained Chaka sing over Mary J. any day.

She sounded good at Essence Fest. Chaka's voice throughout the Dome is a beautiful sound.

Maybe her monitor mix wasn't happening on the VMA's.

I heard her live on Tom Joyner's Sky Show a few months back...she was AMAZING.

I don't think she can hit the high high HIGH notes anymore, but her voice is still very lovely. Too bad her attitude STINKS!

My buddy had the misfortune with having to deal with Chaka's camp for an interview when she was a journalist. (I had the "pleasure" of listening in on one of the conversations she had with one of Chaka's publicists, and I was really shocked! They treated her like a total star-chasing groupie, and not like a woman who was doing her assigned job.) It dragged on and on and on for over a month, and ended with her screaming a colorful array of obscenities in the telephone and then DROP-KICKING it off a balcony. In fairness, she didn't speak to Chaka herself - that's what she was screaming about. Her camp gave her so much hell just because she was under 30 (under 21, to be honest, but she's a helluva journalist) that by the time they called her back to tell her she could talk with "MISS Chaka Khan," my buddy told her camp to tell Chaka to drop dead. In fact, for weeks, we went around singing:

"Chaka Khan thinks she's so fine,
Her asshole smells just like mine!"

It doesn't, because that is second-hand knowledge, from someone who had a bad experience w/ Chaka's publicist, NOT Chaka. As for Chaka Khan stating that she could be difficult to get along w/, that's another thing altogether. Hey, if she could work w/ Prince on Come 2 My House, she can't be all THAT bad, b/c he notoriously, isn't always a "Peach", his D*** self.

I wonder if her ever increasing girth has anything to do with the decline in her vocal skills. I knew Chaka used to be much smaller, but I didn't realized that she was really tiny back in the day.

I like that old pic of hers. Nowadays women are airbrushed to perfection. Nice to see a chick with a lil sag in her titties.

She looks hiiiigh as a kite, though...why is it that all my female heroes (yes, even MISSSSS... Chaka-Khan!) seem to have histories with drug abuse?
