August 11, 2004 -- WHEN your husband is a musical legend, no matter how extensive your own list of talents, you’re likely to live in his shadow. Such was the case for Mayte Garcia, who married Prince in 1996.

Although Mayte had been a member of the New Power Generation, Prince’s backing performers, since 1992, as a background dancer and singer, it wasn’t until she wed Prince in 1996 that she became internationally known.

Even after their marriage was annulled in 1998 and they split in 2000, she was still commonly referred to as “Prince’s ex.” But now the 30-year-old Puerto Rican beauty may finally be recognized for the multitalented dynamo that she is.

This September, she will host a new musicvideo show alongside LA-based DJ Eric Cubiche, which is tentatively titled “Spin Control,” on the English-language Latino network SiTV.

In between filming, Mayte took a little time out of her busy scheduleto tell us about her bellydancing talents, her beloved Golden Retriever and her brand new show.

Tell us about Spin Control.

I just finished filming six episodes. It’s a video show with a reality [twist]. The set is [made up of] two apartments, and it’s as if we’re living in our apartments, and we’re presenting videos [from there] and giving our opinions about them.

Do you have a script for each show?

We’re just freestyling. I’ll do my own research about the videos, and I’ll be like "Did you see that girl with like those pants?! She did not need to be wearing those pants." And Eric will be like, "I think she looked good." And I’ll say, "Of course you did!" It’s like two Latinos just going off, and it’s funny.

Do you two argue onscreen?

Oh yeah. I’ll be like, "You know what? Get out of my apartment. I have a date. Leave me alone."

You moved around a lot when you were a kid. Do you enjoy traveling?

I’ve traveled so much in my life that I’m used to it. But I did purposely get a big dog to try to stay put. I was like, "I need some stability. Let me get a big dog." I have a Golden Retriever named Boogie.

You learned how to bellydance when you were very young. How did that come about?

My mom had joined the YMCA and started [bellydancing] as a workout. She used to come home and practice, and I would just sit there and stare at her. [One day] she was like, "Do you want to belly-dance?" And I was like, "Yeah!" I really loved it, and I started to get good at it.

What are some of your long-term goals?

Just to stay happy and be creative, to do something that I really believe in and love.

I suppose it hasn't occured to y'all that OTHER PEOPLE ARE DOING HER MAKEUP at photo shoots. And if you see candid photos she often wears very little if any makeup.
