PRINCE PROTEGES VS. RICK JAMES PROTEGES!

Who comes out on top?

ROUND 1:
The Time vs. The Stone City Band - P & Rick's premier funk groups

ROUND 2:
Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 vs. Mary Jane Girls - The lingerie-clad girl-groups

ROUND 3:
Sheila E vs. Teena Marie - Talented solo artists

ROUND 4:
The Family vs. Process And The Doo Rags - Short-lived novelties

ROUND 5:
Jill Jones vs. Val Young - P's background singer vs. one of the Brides of Funkenstien

ROUND 6:
George Clinton vs. The Temptations - Veterans whose careers were revived by P & Rick

ROUND 7:
Sheena Easton vs. Eddie Murphy - Already well-known names before their collaborations with P & Rick

Post who your winners are (musically not physically) for each round. I would like to think orgers are objective enough to not choose the Prince acts every time. THANKS!

I'm completely not objective, and I choose the Prince acts across the board.

That was my plan before I read your last line! wink

Sorry. For me, the heart trumps all else.

Ha ha. At least you're honest. My own opinion is Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie have the edge in their respective rounds. All others, I choose Paisley Park.

Dammit , its a tie. Either way you look at it. Each camp is equally funking and slammin.
Long live the funk fro.

In actuality, I would probably agree about the Mary Jane Girls, even I prefer Vanity 6. Sheila and Teena are apples and oranges, but I'll easily go Sheila.

Chaka, George & The Temps are NOT protogees. Ya'll need to get that STRAIGHT, damnit!
Now...
The winners are...(judged strictly on talent & tracks)
The Time (by a hair)
The Mary Jane Girls (obviously not a looks contest)
Val Young
Sheena Easton

That's why I clarified by calling George & The Temptations veterans. I think everyone already knows they aren't real proteges. And Chaka was just a joke--don't take that round seriously.

I didn't even take this thread seriously. I just listed who I thought were talented between the choices. They all acquired fame for their art and I respect all of them.
btw, Process & the Doo Rags had a pretty tight album. I think Jimmy & Terry were copying that project with their group Solo.

Agreed. Process & The Doo Rags were tight. You won't get an argument out of me on that one.

ROUND 1:
The Time vs. The Stone City Band - P & Rick's premier funk groups

This is hard because I never saw the Time live back in the day and we all know now that P played all the instruments on all their records. So for this reason alone I'm going to say Stone City Band, because I've never actually heard the Time live OR on record. Otherwise, I'd say the Time wink

ROUND 2:
Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 vs. Mary Jane Girls - The lingerie-clad girl-groups

Talent-wise, the MJ Girls, but Susan rocks!

ROUND 3:
Sheila E vs. Teena Marie - Talented solo artists

Damn, this is hard, but I gotta go with my girl Lady Tee (sings like whoa and plays guitar, drums, percussion, piano and writes, produces, arranges, performs all her stuff like you know who). Sheila is the bomb, but I have been a hardcore Teena fan for years.

ROUND 4:
The Family vs. Process And The Doo Rags - Short-lived novelties

Family. Process & the Doo-Rags always seemed like a Time rip-off.

ROUND 5:
Jill Jones vs. Val Young - P's background singer vs. one of the Brides of Funkenstien

Neither of their albums are my favorite, but I prefer Jill's. Speaking of Brides of Funkenstein, did you all know that Sheila's manager Lynn Mabry was an official Bride from '76 or '77 to '79. I've got pics!!! Go here -- http://www.angelfire.com/...peek2.html

ROUND 6:
George Clinton vs. The Temptations - Veterans whose careers were revived by P & Rick

GC!!!

ROUND 7:
Sheena Easton vs. Eddie Murphy - Already well-known names before their collaborations with P & Rick

No comment. lol

Great thread! I had fun!

That's cool. I know some people like to turn every thread into an argument and that's not what this one is about. It's just a fun what if-battle of the bands-type scenario.

I have a teensy question. Rick James and Prince can't be the only artists who had side projects and proteges to this extent, but they're the only ones whose satellite work I really know about. Who else did this sort of semi-behind the scenes svengaliness. (Obviously George Clinton was in charge of several musical acts, but who else?).

These are very hard questions to answer.

I would choose The Time over The Stone City Band for the talent of Jesse Johnson alone. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are pretty good also.

As for Vanity 6 vs. The Mary Jane Girls.....I like the music behind Vanity 6 (of course it's The Time and Prince) much better than The Mary Girls' music. Music catches my ear much more than singing. As far as talent goes though, the winner by a landslide is definitely The Mary Jane Girls. Like Handclapsandfingasnaps said, the Mary Jane Girls can actually sing.

As for Sheila E. vs. Teena Marie.....that's an easy choice for me. The winner would be Teena Marie. I think Teena has a far better voice than Sheila and does much more with the making of her music. All the praises I ever hear given to Sheila by people is how great a drummer or percussionist she is.

As for The Family or Process and the Doo Rags, I could care less about either one of these groups.

Eddie Murphy should not have even been mentioned in this comparison. His album "Love's Alright" shows more of his talent from his musical side than the album he did with Rick James. I think he just needed Rick James to get him started. "Love's Alright", which he did without Rick is not the best album in the world, but I see potential in Eddie musically if he works with it and keeps it up.

I am going to say the time since they were more of a commercial success, I never heard anything from Stone City

ROUND 2:
Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 vs. Mary Jane Girls - The lingerie-clad girl-groups

Mary Jane Girls hands down... after all they really could sing! Although Vanity 6 had style looks and presence... that is all fine and dandy but this was a wrecka, not a magazine.

ROUND 3:
Sheila E vs. Teena Marie - Talented solo artists
I hate to say this because I have a lot of respect for Sheila E as a percussionist... and I don't even think this is fair since Sheila has said that she didn't want to be known as a pop star, wanted her rep as an accomplished percusionist... but Teena is my girl! She is my #1 female vocalist... (although Jill Scott is becoming a big contender)

ROUND 4:
The Family vs. Process And The Doo Rags - Short-lived novelties

There again, the Family for more commercial sucess, never heard from the Process

ROUND 5:
Jill Jones vs. Val Young - P's background singer vs. one of the Brides of Funkenstien

Don't know about either one of them

ROUND 6:
George Clinton vs. The Temptations - Veterans whose careers were revived by P & Rick

It would have to be the Temptations.. not only better on their own, but Rick's input spawn a #1 hit... P's collobaration was not as fruitful with George

ROUND 7:
Sheena Easton vs. Eddie Murphy - Already well-known names before their collaborations with P & Rick

I never thought of Eddie as a singer no more than Kim Fields or Latoya Jackson

Post who your winners are (musically not physically) for each round. I would like to think orgers are objective enough to not choose the Prince acts every time. THANKS![/quote]

I included Eddie Murphy because "Party All The Time" was, believe it or not, Rick's biggest U.S. pop hit ever. I felt it should be represented somewhere in a thread about his work with other artists. I thought Sheena was the artist most similar on Prince's side. Both will forever be remembered musically for their work with Prince and Rick first, despite the other albums they made.
