Dare I come in here?

Kissmequick- I totally agree.

I am one that truly believe Love is Blind and "understand" people have preferences and for the most part I don't care. But I have to be honest about something. A red flag always goes up when I encounter a person who has a "preference" for another race, particularly African American's (because I'm African American myself and am familiar with the legacy and the "fallouts" and "brainwashing" in our community as a result of Black American Slavery). I have never questioned a person's RIGHT to have preferences. That is not a issue nor a question. We live in America so a person's right to do so is in stone. My curiosity tends to lead me to the questions of why. If you are African American, WHY do you find other races more attractive? If you are African American, WHY ARE you uncomfortable with your hair in it's natural state? If you are Asian, WHY is it you don't find other Asians attractive? If you are white and dating, WHY is it you won't give another white person the time of day? If you are a black man in America have you ever asked yourself WHY you tend to have a preference for blonde haired blue eyed white women? Where did that come from, considering you were raised in a all African American environment.

Which leeds me to Prince. Since Prince has come on to the scene, out of all of the women he dated, that we know of, only 2 have had both black parents. Kim Upsher, from his high school days and she was the black waitress in Purple Rain, and Nona Gaye (which personally I don't believe they dated). Growing up as a little negro wink with Prince being my favorite, I noticed at the height of my favorite's career, there was a NOTICEABLE absence of black women professionally and romantically. I remember at the time Under the Cherry Moon was released, I was thinking here is a black man who wrote and produced a mainstream film in 1986 and not only is the lead actress white, as well as Jerome's Girlfriend, but I could count on one hand how many black people were in that film and how small their parts were. Why did this happen?

Now reverse the tables. Where Bruce Springsteen's projects full of black women? Where Gun's N Rose's projects full of mostly black women? No, it didn't happen. But many black artist had leading ladies that were not black but the favor wasn't returned from the other artists on a consistent basis.

I've really enjoyed his "new found" blackness over the past few years and hopes it continues.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

So like Why didn't he or was it just in the days Prince was raised and I Already Know it was Like NO No ... There was a Seperation in the 60's. How was it being Raised in MINNEAPOLIS in PRINCE"S Day? I hear you smile Preference is fine but I too always find it suspect whenever anyone of any race insists on dating outside their race. That said, Prince definitely has a preference - for White women, for Latino women & for certain types of Black women (yes, I know he dated Nona & crushed on Patrice Rushen back in the day). But if I worried about every Black man that didn't prefer Black women of all types I'd be a craaaaazy bitch lol

Also, I am coming from the point of view of a woman with a Black, Native American, and Irish background. I've been told I don't look "all black" and I understand that I am not "all black", but do you think anyone cares if they see me and just see nothing but a black girl. No. They will consider me just a"plain black" girl.

I've been told I don't look "all black" but my skin is brown and like you, I have an Irish background (my grandpaw is mixed and he married black and had my pa and my pa married black and they got me), but I don't have the hair like Vanity or the other women Prince dates. I don't go around telling people outside "I got Irish in me" cos it's such a small, small, small part. It's like how some black people say, "I'm half Indian, that's why I got this good hair..." When I check the race box, I check black. But Vanity would have to check other. When I look at her, I don't see Black. White people or other races may look at her and say Black, like how they do with Halle Berry. But when I see Halle, I see mixed.

I Hear ya Cause so Many Black women are Truly Gorgeous. I think Prince is Just TOO MUCH a SUCKER for a PRETTY Face and This is His Downfall

Yes, put PRINCE and some other men have their notions. I read some interesting comments on some sites about race and the things non-black men say about black women are harsh. It's as though they think all of them are hideous.

PRINCE does like a pretty face or the characteristics that some people think make up a pretty person (i.e. long hair, skinny nose, small lips) ... and sometimes the girl with these characteristics may not be as attractive, but just because she has that Vanity hair, she's automatically pretty.

I see..so, if you are Black American, then you are just "plain black". I would bet that Monica, Brandy, and the other "plain black" women you mentioned probably have Native American in them as well. Of course, I have NO idea if this is true, but a large number of Black Americans have Native American blood as well. A large number of them don't, but the point is that you can't tell by looking. To you, they are simply "plain black".I understand that you are basing your words off of appearance alone. I just think you could dig a little deeper with your perception. "Black" isn't just "Black American". That is ridiculous. In that case Black people in Europe are just European, not Black.

But Vanity looks no where near black. It's easy to say Monica and Brandy and Beyonce are black. Anyone can see that. They probably have a small part of Native American in them, but most of the black people I know, they are always saying "I got some Indian in me ... blah, blah" as though that makes them better.

Well, I am rambling. I don't know where I am going with this. I am through with this thread.

Good-bye.

I think the point is that because of the various racial mixtures....there isn't a look of being "black". My great grandmother was an Native American woman. My grandmother had 14 kids.....some of my aunts had hair and skin color like Vanity, some have nappy/kinky hair, some have straight hair and dark skin, some have light skin and kinky hair. My mother was the darkest in her family and had straight hair. Did that pass down to me. Nope. But I had a light skinned daugther with darker skinned man. Genes are genes..you don't know what will come on.

We are all just a bunch of black ppl...period.

There is no way a person just simply say...oh..she looks "BLACK".

I know a couple who's oldest daughter looks just like Vanity...and couple is black...

We come in different shades and colors.....

Prince likes what he likes.....keep it moving. Mani is whatever she is....we know Vanity is a biracial woman...nona is black.... shrug

O.K. so ya saying Black Woman have got to be made More White Looking or something in order to be CONSIDERED Beautiful in this World? I Think ya have the POP Market doing that to Black Performers..Toning down the Enthenticity.I See what ya mean. Nowadays though it's COOL so To Speak to be Black or Spanish cause like J-Lo and her Big ASS but well Generally Speaking That is Not a Perfect Feature considered in MODELING Magazines She'd Be TOO Fat. True White men don't Necessarily Dig on Black Girls. If a Black Girl sorta likes a White Guy maybe she isn't gonna get him compared to her Blond Haired Blue Eyed Girlfriend. It's All Crap actually. Such a Pity and as Prince Sings in CONTROVERSY...I WISH THERE WAS NO BLACK OR WHITE I WISH THERE WERE NO RULES...I AGREE. Tell ya Something as I said about him and his Security Seeing Color well I guess in America ya Have to see Color that this one is Black,White,Red or Yellow ya know what I Mean. That's Great but I Think Mixing the Races is a BEAUTIFUL Thing ya Get Alot of Exotics that way. I think Prince just digs on Exotics. He likes Mixtures in people. He Says he's of Mixed Heritage. Some Racists think that the Children are listen to Cher Singing HALF BREEDS. Some may even say Devil Spawn. This is just ASSINE Thinking just as the Fact All Black People Love Fried Chicken Some White and Chinese love it to. It's just Southern Cookin also Why is like People think a Black person Can't eat Sushi? Why Not or Like Punk Rock Music? Why Not? Stereotypes make me Sick! They are For IGNORANT People just like ALL ITALIANS are NOT MAFIA! ALL Italians DON"T LIKE or Eat Pasta Every Minute. If I as an Italian American Latino Girl ate Pasta all the Time I'd be Fat as a House. Diet is Everything. If Ya Wanna Lose weight eat Salads and Low Calorie foods. Granted it's All Genetics and How we are Raised. Ya can be a Millionaire and Dig Cheese Sandwhiches or Mac and Cheese . Just Cause ya Have money doesn't mean ya Gotta now give up things ya love to be the HOLLYWOOD COOL.. I Swear as it is True being HOLLYWOOD Ain't ALL THAT! Partying and DRINKING and LIVING IT UP NIGHT AFTER NIGHT Is Bad for Ya Health if Ya Starving to be Thin for Decades ya Gonna get Ill. Things Catch Up to Ya. Stress get's ya. Ya Gotta Live Healthy if Ya Wanna Be Healthy. I Get Sick Of All Kinds of Hatred in This World. I get Sick with OUR AMERICAN WARS. When at war we are Taught to HATE the ENEMY and Feel Nothing Just Kill them! We Have Killed Countless Woman and Children. This is wrong. Atrocity. Look at WWII. Hitler and what he did to Poor People who were Trusting. It's so sad. war is HELL! hatred is Hell. God Never Deemed this to be True. 9-11 was and still is HEINOUS. What a sad,sad day.....

What I'd like to know is WHAT are you Taught in a POLICE TRAINNING CAMP? Why is there so MUCH RACISM amongst Police? I'll tell you what Someone told me. She told me it was Because MOST CRIME OCCURS in BLACK AREAS by BLACK PEOPLE. Why do POLICE OFFICERS Shoot a Million times? Isn't once enough or twice even? Why so many times? Such Unecessary Violence in NY that it cost the CITY with AMADU and the PLUNGER INCIDENT who did this to him a HATIAN? WHITE POLICE OFFICERS and get this??? It was in MY NEIGHBORHOOD that it OCCURED and I was in MINNEAPOLIS at the time. I kept reading the article over and over again in Disbelief and ya Know they ACCUSED AMadu as being GAY. He was Married. Now I don't know if he was or not but they Abused this man with a Plunger and these DIRTY COPS cost NY City MILLIONS as he won big in Court Against the CITY. It's disgusting even Howard Beach..Italian Guys beating a Black guy with a Baseball Bat for buying Pizza. As an ITALIAN / SPANISH woman this Makes me DISGUSTED with my Own Nationality of Men who would do Such Things. It's Truly Horrible. I just Cannot take this Horrible Behavior in anyone whatever Color or Religion. To Me no One Race is Superior or Religion, howvere ya get certain People who THINK their's is. Oh and I have seen first hand where Jamaican People see a white person in Their Restaurant and God Forbid like me liking the Food or the men and they be giving ya Looks like ya UNWELCOMED. Why if I'm White and Feeling Ya Culture ,Ya Food Ya Men am I like looked at as ODD? Like Prince always said bout stuff Race WE are ALL HUMAN..RACE CUT ME. CUT YOU..BOTH The BLOOD IS RED. See I'm Different I Don't see Color like that and I just Dig what I feel. Not Everyone Feels as I do. They try to get me like put me back into My Own. Like I gotta date Italian or Spanish Exclusively. Well! Assholes come in Every Nationality and Color alos. People gotta get Wise is what it is...

Heybaby, I'm with you and understand you. I got your back.

It is our society and as black Americans, I think it's our responsibility to recognize and change the way we have been conditioned. That is, no particular race or feature is superior than another. So straight hair isn't GOOD and Kinky hair isn't BAD. African Features are not UGLY and EUROPEAN features are not BEAUTIFUL. It is so funny because MOST black people on earth have dark skin and African Features, yet ask the average black American to give you a physical discription of what ugly is.

I only hope Black Americans both male and female (including entertainers) can learn to love ourselves a little bit more and TRULY get a revelation on that fact that no one is superior to no one. It's never too late to learn.

note- Jill Scott.....now THAT is a black woman All black Americans can learn from.

I swear ya gonna worry what Magazines or so called SOCIETY DOMINATES then ya Gonna go Crazy as Many are NOT The IDEAL or Perfect... What was Considered Perfect Anyway? Perfect Features and Perfect Hair and Skin. Models are so thin and we Find out alot of times it's DRUGS. Maybe Mani is Black Partially so then why doesn't she Acknowledge this fact? Right? I wonder what Prince thinks about Mani getting so Much negative Comments? Wonder what he thinks that Alot of fans think she's Ugly? I don't but Others do as they Dislike Larry also. Maybe all these people just don't Care.. I would ! I wouldn't want my Fans Hating on my Friends or Loved ones. Damn!

I said what I had to say and thank you to others who said what they had to say. It's all good.

Now, why is that if someone feels a thread is "stupid" they feel the need to post and completely negate what anyone's thoughts might be. Hell, it's a discussion. If you don't agree with something said, post your thoughts. If you think the thread is "stupid" why in the world would you "contribute" to it by posting how dumb you think it is? Is it taboo to say what you feel here when the subject is "touchy"? I make no apologies for simply speaking my mind and making sure everyone knew it was just that, speaking my mind. No anger, no "hard feelings", no trying to change another's mind.

In the past and in the future as well, I simply by-pass those threads I have no comment on or think are not interesting. I see no point in posting some sideways statement about how dumb the thoughts are to me. What do you get out of it? Feeling good because you made sure people knew you thought their comments are stupid??

Regardless, to each their own. I know that this type of thing will continue, but again, I just wanted to "state my mind".

Peace.

Umm North Africa is not considered black it is Arabic. examples Algeria, Tunsia, not black

That is simply for political reasons. If it's in Africa, its origins are black. Europeans may have taken over the continent, but they can't erase its culture or its history.

Idais,

For me personally I posted my opinion because it's the way I felt and I wanted to share my opinion. I also posted more than just the comment that this is a stupid ass thread. I wasn't attempting to make anyone feel lesser or dumb, but why should opinions be reserved only for people that agree with the content of this or any other thread? When anyone posts anything on an open forum they will and should receive various feedback comments, both positive and negative. Freedom of speech, as limited as it has become, still allows for varying opinions. The fact that this is a stupid thread is mine. Deal with it...or don't -it's not gonna stop me from posting my opinion.
Have a wonderful day.

Hmm.

Yeah, she looks pretty brown to me. wink

There is coincidence, and there is intent, and I'm of the thought that Prince's dating lighter-skinned women was more of a coincidental thing. Now that I think of it, all my boyfriends were very dark-skinned. It's not like I said, "I'm going to date dark-skinned men ONLY - keep those yella boys away from me!" You know?
