Mayte is NOT as bad a singer as SO many have made her out to be. I just bought 1-800-NEW-FUNK from a vintage record store and was waiting to hear a very tone deaf woman wailing through my speakers on "If I Love U Tonight", but instead a heard a pleasant, smooth voice. No, she isn't what I would consider soulful, but she is very sensual and has a nice tone. This is not at all what I expected since I have heard and read nothing but negative comments about her here. I also think the track itself is very nice. Granted, I have yet to hear Mayte's entire album, but this one tune is very smooth indeed. The only problem I have with it is some of the background vocals, which Mayte didn't even do. Just though I'd give my two cents y'all.

Nona Gaye sounds nice too. The only songs I have heard by her are "Love Sign" and "A Woman's Gotta Have It". "Love Sign" really takes me back to the 90s. I think it's a jam.
