Michael Bland to Play on Next Soul Asylum Album

SOUL ASYLUM FORGES AHEAD

With the news that bassist Karl Mueller and his wife and friends wanted to hear -- several weeks of chemotherapy have cleared the cancer in his throat -- Soul Asylum is forging ahead with plans for its next album and, really, its next era.

The band has selected a new drummer, Michael Bland, who everyone knows as Prince's drummer of the '90s (last seen gigging with Har Mar Superstar two weeks ago). Bland will join the other three band members at the semi-vacated Flyte Tyme Studio in September, where longtime Flyte Tyme engineer Steve Hodge will serve as producer.

The plan is to re-record all of the tracks they've been demoing for the past couple years, and then choose a label to release the final album. Hodge is best known for engineering pop and R&B records -- going back to Donny Osmond's "Puppy Love" (no kidding) -- but S.A. manager Jake Walesch assured, "The album will rock."

It's just crazy for me because I went to high school with most of the guys from Soul Asylum. They were all one or two years older than me. Karl (who just had, and thank God it sounds like beat, throat cancer) was the first punk rocker at my high school. He used to wear the bondage pants, the whole deal! First time I saw Soul Asylum (who back then were called Loud Fast Rules) was in about 1980. I used to have a radio show on a public station and I had them on and asked if they were ever gonna put out a record and they said "Well, there has not been much interest" Ten years later they are on the cover of Rolling Stone! And of course I have been a Prince fan forever, first saw him live in 1982. And of course in 1995 I saw him out at Paisley Park all the time with Michael Bland on the drums! Cool! I just saw michael play recently with Dr. mambos Combo out at paisley Park after the 2nd Xcel Energy Center show.
