What do Andre Cymone's albums sound like?

After reading a thread below I am curious to know a bit more about Andre Cymone. Specifically his music. I think he only released 3 albums. What do they sound like and are they worth tracking down? Are they at all "Prince-like"?

I disagree! Survivin' In The 80's is a great little album IMO.

I remember being totally amazed by the final track (at least I think it was the final track), until my brother told me it was a rip off of an Elton Jonh record. He was right. (the record being Don't Let the Sun Come Down on Me).

The album has some great layered vocal effects and a hilarious cover.

All three albums have the synth sound. The first one "Livin' In The New Wave" was kind of like Prince's music because of the synths, which I love, but it is far more new wave than any of Prince's work. I love the album. If you like the synth sound, but with a new wave twist, you'll like this one. My favorite track is "So Fine".....now that track sounds just like something Prince would have done.

I don't have the second album, "Surviving The 80" but I do have a download of "Make Me Want To Dance", it still in the synth vein as the first album but is more funk oriented. I should have bought the second album when it came out but I kept putting it off because they never played any of it on the radio and I didn't know what to expect. I sure as hell can't find it now.

The third album "AC" is more like Prince than the first album. Prince gave him "The Dance Electric" and lent him Lisa and Wendy for the track. This album is geared more to an R&B audience than the first one. Several tracks received R&B airplay down here.

Hmm. Sounds like they may be worth tracking down, at a reasonable price. Thanks for the info.

AC is great. I always thought the other 2 were crap, but I recently got a CDR of surviving in the 80's and it sounded better than i remembered

I only have one Andre Cymone album, his 1985 album 'A/C'.This is the album that features the Prince-written song "Dance Electric".The album is a good mid-80s dance/R&B record, and most songs have a strong Prince influence.Like most R&B/dance albums from this period,it's filled with drum machines, synthesizers, sexy lyrics and even a rap at the beginning of one song ("Neon Pussycat") The best songs...

"Pretty Wild Girl"---sounds like a cousin of Prince's "The Beautiful Ones".But it's a very impressive slow jam.

"Book Of Love"----a strong uptempo track that should have been a single. The falsetto vocals are very Prince-like.

"The Dance Electric"---of course, this song is the highlight.

I agree with your choices from that album.Does he say something about "falling in love with a man ai'nt no surprise" on that song while singing about abguy who gets his heart broken by a woman?

By the way,do you have this on cd?If so,can we work out a trade or something?

That's what he said on "Book Of Love". Truly ahead of his time.

Didn't andre produce 4 Adam ant (as well as many others)? I think I have that album somewhere? Anyone remember it? It was not the usual "Prince charming" stuff though.....

Come to think of it. I think he did. I could be wrong though but I thought I remembered reading it somewhere. It's been so long.

Andre Cymone deserves far much credit than he has been given. I remember David Eye answered a thread about Evelyn King and said that Andre produced "Teenager" for her. I remember that too but I had forgotten all about it. Andre later went on to produce Jody Watley's first album "Jody Watley". I know EVERYONE remembers that one...."Looking For A New Love". He also produced other albums for her.

Blackguitaristz stated that he always considered Prince and Andre as equals. I totally agree with him.

All of them were good and each one different.
My Favorite is the 80's "MOTF" and "Don't let the future come down on you"
& What are we doing here are his best ever, With the whole A/C album equally
satisfying! I still have A/C but I lost his 1st 2 Albums!
Some body burned me a Cd of everything on the net.
It's pretty good! Has Prince ever done Dance Electric in Concert?
Wish He and Dez were still with the band!
Think About it Prince,Andre,Morris & Dez could have been the beatles.
We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced
when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Andre produced the single "Room At The Top" for Adam Ant which was a top 20 hit in the U.S. I think he also wrote and produced his follow up single "Rough Stuff". They had more of a dance-funk sound with a few rock guitars thrown in.

Other artists who have worked with Andre Cymone:

Pebbles (the single "Love/Hate" from her debut album)
James Ingram ("Better Way" from the Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack)
Jermaine Stewart (several tracks on the 'Say It Again' album)
Pretty Poison (a few tracks on the 'Catch Me I'm Falling' LP)

I used to own them all.

I like all of them, and I've always thought him and St. Paul were the most talented associates as far as being able to do everything pretty well. "AC" is my favorite album with "Sweet Sensuality" and "Book of Love" being the best tracks. "Livin' In The New Wave" is also very good. "Survivin' in the 80's" is decent but not quite as good as the others. I would love to hear new stuff from him. I saw him at a Prince concert in LA during the "0(+" tour, and wish I would have asked him what he'd been working on. But I figured enough people had already bugged him throughout the evening...

You know,I went back and played the song "Book Of Love" again, and it seems that he is saying that! Still a kickass song though and it could have easily been a hit single in 1985/85.Sorry,I don't have it on CD,just an old cassette.

EastBayGirl

It was Andre who got me into Minneapolis music! I was into goth and new wave only when Prince was starting to get popular, when some crazy girlfriend of mine here in Oakland played a song called "Get it Girl" by Andre and I was hooked. I played "Livin' in the New Wave" over and over, then cautiously got into Prince. If you like 80s new-wave and funk, you will love his first two records, hands down.
