In the second half of the two-set, two and one-half-hour program, Fantasia was less convincing. Prince's "Purple Rain" is a showcase for guitar, not voice -- not even her bravura instrument. And her presentation of her hit "I Believe" was unbelievably overwrought, as she tried to out-Mariah Mariah Carey. Nonetheless, Fantasia clearly demonstrated that she has a shelf life.

The future of the other "Idols" is dubious. Their ensemble numbers in the second half -- including a 20-minute run-through of Prince hits (these "Idols" were too clueless to mention that this is his home turf) -- were as anonymous as a too-loud theme-park revue.
