How do I get rid of pop-ups?

And I'm not talking unexpected erections ok!

On my home computer I keep getting these stupid pop-up's that can flash up even if i dont have my browser open. I have a cable connection. The pop-ups look a bit like the old windows pop-ups but are obviously fake because they are trying to sell shit like drugs, porn, etc etc. Sometimes they even warn about "spyware". They usually have a link to click.

How do I get rid of them? Is there a program I can use to block them? (my Macfee firewall doesn't seem to stop them).

Please help. pray

There are browsers you can download that'll prevent pop-ups

Netscape is one, I also know google has a toolbar you can install to prevent pop-ups.
Sbc yahoo is another browser you might be able to download. I'm not saying either is the greatest but they work.

It sounds like they've installed some spyware in you're computer. You might be able to go to your add/remove file directory and find what program is causing that.

I hope you have an antivirus program on your computer. smile

If you weren't searching pornsites this might not have happened. I hope you've learned you lesson young man!! giggle

download and run spybot and adaware

if the problem persists, do a search from some shredder program that gets rid of something called "cool web search"

I have Norton Internet Security, Adaware, SpyHunter, Spybot, and a program called CleanMe and I still get popups and other crap on my computer. I run these programs almost daily and each one seems to catch a few different intrusions that the other ones didn't.
I recommend to everyone to have protection against viruses, spyware and adaware etc. because your computer can really get messed up without it. Even with all of these programs, I still can't completely rid my computer of some of the spyware junk! My computer runs slower because of it and occasionally strange things happen like my homepage and browser changes on me, not to mention other peculiar things.

Try Pop-Up Stopper from www.panicware.com

It's a little bit cumbersome, but it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Yep those are windows network message popups, annoying as hell.
Adaware has a special plugin just to disable them. Worth the download (for adaware + the plugin).

If you are using WinXP:

- Go to "Start" --> "Run" and enter SERVICES.MSC
- Locate the entry for "Messenger"; Double click this entry and set it to "Stopped" and "Disabled".

Neversin.

Thanks man! biggrin

I actually found a plug-in to the adaware program that disabled the messenger service, which I did last night, and I get no more pop-ups. I didnt see your post til after but I guess it would have been easier to just turn it off as you suggested. doh! biggrin

Isnt it fucking annoying that Microsoft write such crappy softwear with these stupid backdoors that are easily accessed by hackers and spammers?
