How are moderators selected?

Are they selected or do they volunteer??

Do they need any special skills?

Any prior moderating experience?

Selected, generally. We don't often add new moderators to the team but people expressing an interest in getting involved are obviously people we'd consider.

Ability to be rude on demand to complete strangers is a plus, as is a sarcastic demeanour smile

Nah basically a moderator needs to be a fairly forthright person, to make difficult or unpopular judgement calls under pressure. Needs to be able to put a lot of time in obviously, and needs to be quite thick-skinned when it comes to dealing with abusive lunatics on teh interweb.

Ha!

The main reason (*) you may have heard bad things about me is because I do a lot of the moderating on the site, so I'm first in the firing line when a moderation decisions upsets someone. Basically, you can never please everyone, all you can do is treat everyone equally and try to make the best judgement call you can under the circumstances.

As for how I became involved in the Org... well I'd been around the PML, the PPML, the Org v1.0 etc for years and so I had talked to Ben and Kevin before, and given Ben lots of feedback and suggestions for site improvements. There was a time after the launch of Org v2.0 when things were so flamey and out of control, I got sick of it and left, and Ben shut down the GD forum etc. Basically, we needed to do something to sort things out, so we put together some forum rules, asked our users to agree to them before posting, and I stepped up to help with moderation. I had no interest in being a moderator but as a long-time Orger I knew I wanted the site to improve and so in the absence of anyone else doing anything, I stepped up to help as best I could (with some encouragement from my Org friends).

And if you call me "laddie" again I'll kick your fuckin' arse! smile

(*) also, I'm a sarcastic abrasive bastard
