Computer Protection

I have installed my first firewall. I can only view some of the emoticons here moving.

Does anyone know how I can enable all of them to work now? I miss seeing them all move cry

No. "Gays and technical skill? Uh, uh." But it's a very good idea to have a Firewall. Why, while I was on the Org yesterday, my Firewall stopped a port attack from someone in Rio de Janeiro - twice!

So fellow Orgers - are you wearing protection? (So to speak.) A Firewall is a must-have.

Perhaps this is a question with an obvious answer but where does one get a firewall?

Try ZoneAlarm. It's free to download. And it's here: www.zonelabs.com

That's the one I have, zone alarm. It's only free for a trial period mad

McMeekle, do you know much about them? I can't see what I could before installing this firewall.

I suggest a little excursion to your local computer store and get a McAfee Firewall or something somesuch. It's not that expensive and well worth the money spent.

It doesn't only block portattacks but also backtracks whomever is attacking you and supllies their names and addresses.

Also... Always download Microsoft's free security software updates for Windows from their homepage so hackers can't get control of your computer even if they manage to get past your port. "Better safe than sorry" is one my mottos.

Zone Alarm is pretty good, and so is Norton Personal Firewall. The only problem is that if you aren't very technical, they can be a pain to configure properly.

You can also get a lot of ADSL and cable modem / routers come with built-in hardware firewalls.

hmm I'm wondering if the 'Correct Connect' that came with my ntl:home Broadband Internet is as such? Any ideas if that's what it is please?

Thanx Ian and Scifi biggrin

No, that isn't a firewall. I think it's just a test utility to make the connection process easier, and help with call-center troubleshooting etc.

Really, I wouldn't contemplate leaving an unpatched, unprotected PC online with broadband or better. A firewall is an absolute must. I get port-scanned by script kiddies every half hour smile

Also just for a laugh, I put my friends iPaq online for a few hours... it was running Linux, and we'd hacked the web server to make it look like a Windows box running an old very of IIS biggrin After a few hours we'd clocked up a couple of hundred attempts to hack it, coz little s'kiddies thought it was a nice juicy unpatched Windows box on broadband, great for using for P2P storage etc.

I downloaded a free firewall and it's pretty good. It keeps out unwanted elements.

Everytime I go to post on a thread I have to do it twice, it is fucking up my enjoyment here...

Anyone got any ideas of how to configure this beast so that I can post normally?

Thanx.

It's not that hard... what rules have you got set up at the moment? If it's too messy, I think you can set it to just prompt you when you access the network... so you can choose to allow or deny traffic

I don't know what rules I have actually! I don't know how to choose to allow or deny traffic. I have a computer wiz mate who I'll ask to do it for me, I think!! Thank you Ian beer

I think it's about time someone posted a joke containing the following words:

back entry
scanned
ports
probed
intrusion
throbbing

Ok, throbbing is one I added myself.

sigh That there person from Rio de Janeiro has attacked my port a couple of times more. My firewall is holding up, so it's not a problem - it just gets pretty annoying. Why don't whomever just give up? And am I the only one on the Org experiencing this?

As it only happens when I am on the Org, can I assume that an Orger is behind it? If so, please stop. You are wasting both of our time.
