I had to wait 5 days too.
I was told it was until my cheque had cleared.

I never had to wait when I first signed up but I did when I changed my user name recently. It started when org members posted some crap on okayplayer.com & the okayplayers came to get their revenge. Ben installed the 5 day wait around then to keep em out. Now if people can wait 5 days, I guess Ben knows they will not miuse the site so easily or join up just to do so

That's been in place for quite a while now. All new accounts have to wait 5 days before they can post.
What it does help with, is stopping abusive posters who have been deactivated from the site... coming back with a new account every hour to cause more problems. It doesn't seem to be dissuading anyone from setting up lots of multiple identities though
