Is there any way to ask for the removal of a moderator because he is unable?

The climate on the site has been gradually deteriorating for several months due to the inability of some moderators. Many users no longer participate in discussions for fear of being targeted by the trolls that the moderators let loose, while others are banned for private resentments. How are moderators chosen? Is there any way to ask for the removal of those most unable to fill such a delicate role?

Thank you.

I was a PAID monitor for several years, for an online service that few remember: Prodigy. Our rules were strict. We could not advertise our businesses. We had to use our real names. We could *suggest* that a user be disciplined but we could not implement the punishment by ourselves.
That kept personal issues out of the decisions. But that required staffing that's not evident here.

BUT...we must remember that we are using this no-advertising site for free and that the mods are either volunteers or there's some secret billionnaire bankrolling the site. smile

Others may disagree, but I'd pay an annual fee and/or see advertising here that would help pay for software and hardware upgrades.

It'd be nice to have some "thumbs up" emojis that would replace the quoting of a page-long post to merely add "me too" as a comment. Reformulation of the forum titles would make sense (all proteges and band members are "Prince Music", with "and More" turned into "Prince The Man" where the personal discussions that some want, would fit).

All in all: civility would help. We're all here for free. Old personal slights should not be able to be delved into by mods, etc.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Moderators work for free as users write for free, share informations, create community. Many moderators simply aren't able to do this job. They protect their troll friends, delete ad hoc messages and use moderation out of personal grudge. I'm asking Ben if there is any way to suggest a renewal of the most inept moderators.

^^^ Agree with the above.

IMO, the moderation here is biased because there has not been a mod changing of the guard in such a long time. The site is deteriorating as a result. Many of the old orgers (some beloved) have left and will not be returning because of how bad it's gotten here.

The Org has been around for a long time - I have been here since 2004 and I know some have been here even longer than that for sure. This was a place to get great music info, and interact and meet people whose commonality was love of Prince (all those Invasions!) and interact on a variety of subjects - but the internet has grown and there are a myriad of other sites to get info and discuss music and topics of the day.

I suggest orgnoting or emailing Ben your concerns and/or suggestions, but there is no guarantee anything will change. Petitions maybe? Ben needs to know just how many feel this way.

Or...maybe this site has outlived it's once magical lure. shrug

i think the real consequence of these terrible, terrible, just... just terrible decisions is the fact that good people are leaving, good... kindhearted people leaving. this is like sneaking up and shoving a pillow in someone's face who was already sick in the hospital, you're killing it!

As I wrote before in a message the moderator deleted, I closed my account some month ago after 21 years for bad moderation. Errors, preferences for some users to the detriment of others, deletion of messages for personal grudges and inequity in the management of the community. Many people have left the site and prince.org is now described as a toxic place. Perhaps a change of moderation could save what's left of a once-important site.

I'm on this site for three years now and I felt it was great 3 years ago. But now it's like you don't know what post could get you banned. And you really can't tell, because you're not inside the heads of the mods, you can't tell what they might view as disrespectful, flaming behavior. They could hold a personal grudge against you, don't like what you say and either snip, warn or ban you. If this site is really important to ben, then he should listen to the valid complaints made by a lot of us. Lot's of us leave this site, the P&R forum is overtaken by trolls and complaints from the community are being ignored. It's really not good looking for the forum and it honestly makes me sad.

The other mods know Casey fucked up by posting that “ToLERaNCe” tirade. They removed the other thread to save his ass. They have no plans to address the issue.

The mods sometimes make wrong decisions, they probably think no more of it. Meanwhile, people we've spoken to on here for over 15 years, and have got to know like friends, are gone in a puff of smoke. It's especially frustrating when we disagree with a decision and can't do anything about it.

So I started this thread to ask to Ben if something could change. Moderators like luv4u are sinking the ship removing and muting anyone who senses that the water is entering.

The thread was taken down for the founder to review. And it was all off topic and a derailed train wreck from SOTT to omg what just happened to so and so. Another thread was created to continue about SOTT.

My $.02...I think there is a real issue with selective policy enforcement, favoritism, bullying, and an outright lack of appreciation for those on these boards...it's membership...for our contributions to the cause. That said, this latest episode was a very quick fix. Just admit you were inaccurate, and we would have all moved on. Instead, this moderator chose to exhibit power and force under the guise of "volunteerism", which quite frankly pissed some people off...and rightly so. I think we need to get back to a more collabortive enviornment, and not one that is RULED through division. Thanks for listening.

Ok, if I haven't already told you luv4u...I dig you. I dig you a lot. You have been fair, honest, and inclusive. So I say this with a caveat. To simply excuse a behavior by suggesting others "derailed" it, instead of addressing the real issue is taking part in it yourself. It needs to be addressed, and quickly. Hopefully this "review" is doing just that...

Nicely said and I agree. Biased moderation is not good for any site. If you disgaree or try to correct a post by a mod you are labeled a "troll" and your post may be deleted or you may get banned. Is that moderation in its truest definition?

I think this latest incident concerning Number23,Kares and the moderator formally known as Militant is a massive abuse of his position

His action to ban two members who post valuable information and insight was to the detriment of the other members to serve his own purpose.

It obvious the guys ego is out of control and somebody like that shouldn't hold the post of moderator.

Thank you cool

That new SOTT thread was created to continue the SOTT discussion while I took down the other one (part 3), so it can be reviewed by Ben. It was derailed to what just happened. It was not an excuse but just to simply let other posters know.

I disagree. I think that his censorship policy (and not moderation, which is a very different thing) is one of the big problems of the site, especially in the management of problematic users. Harmful behavior was accepted only because it was done by people considered well documented on Prince. A big mistake. Getting to know Prince and bringing in information isn't an excuse for being an a**hole, and it shouldn't be an excuse to tolerate systematic trolling of users. For *years*, dozens and dozens of people have appealed to moderators for fairness in moderation and moderators failed. He more than others. And prince.org have lost dozens and dozens of people, now out of the community, in exchange for someone posting Amazon links with care. This is sad.

Here's one thing that's just so so goddamn bizarre to me. Just so incredibly weird. Maybe the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life. And I know they're not going to address it even now, just to keep up that streak of weirdness.

Can you guys recall ever seeing any of the mods, ANY of them, at any point say anything towards Bart about his caustic way of speaking to people. Have you ever seen them delete any of his posts, has anyone ever raised that issue privately with the mods and have they ever spoke to it there? I can't recall a single instance and it is truly, truly weird. It's like the guy has dirt on them cause they just won't fucking say a word about it. And then the incomparable Casey Rain has the nerve to talk about how we all have to be nice to each other or risk being banned? This is lunacy. Sometimes the snips I see on posts, mainly from luv4u (not trying to start anything with you, I mostly like you, but it's gotta be said) feel like the mod team is just throwing darts to see which posts get removed and which don't. Why does Bart get a free pass if you guys supposedly want to run this site on love and tolerance? You're driving the userbase away and have been for many years, I've seen this place get so much shit from every other Prince community I've been on, many users and mods called out by name for being assholes and/or ineffective mods.

As I said in the now deleted thread, I don't even want to see Bart banned because I love the guy when he's chill and there's a part of me that thinks his rudeness schtick is hilarious. But to hide behind this feel-good bullshit of wanting a tolerant and nice place for everyone can't fly when it seems like you all have done everything in your power to cultivate the exact opposite of that feeling in the first place.

Word.
