But not everyone who recently joined is a new or young fan. I'm 40 and have been a fan since I saw the Purple Rain tour as a kid. I've been lurking here and reading threads since 2003 but I never felt the need to join until now. Lipstick Alley has been my message board of choice for the last decade plus and that's where I post and where I used to moderate. Not saying the Alley is better, but they don't lock or delete threads just because somebody got a little sensitive about their fave. I totally apologize for newbies who may start or dominate threads, but I've seen questionable topics repeated over here for years by longtime members. Prince's penis size and sexual habits have been beat like a dead horse but this is the place to discuss all things P right?
Thanks for reminding people of what's what. That's right, many of us have actually been here before under a different name(s), but chose not to interact for whatever reason, just lurking and reading instead. And yes, there are other places that Prince fans have played too.
While I'm Prince's age, it would do for some of us to remember that younger people and new members are what's going to drive this bus going forward and we should welcome them with open arms! If my kids didn't know about Prince and his music from my husband and I, they would have never known about him. Yeah, there's always some stupid around somewhere, but after all these years most things have already been discussed here so of course there's gonna be rehash happening. Furthermore, something you like may not be anything I want to delve into and it really is okay to have different interests. Stay away from stuff you don't care about, you'll feel much better, less aggravated, and you'll also be less inclined to aggravate others.
And for goodness sakes, remember that every one of us mourns differently...it doesn't make one person better than another.

Right now it's a little weird to me - and I'll say this openly - to sometimes see entire discussions being dominated by people who signed up AFTER April 21st.
I understand that's it's par for the course, and I think a lot of these people will likely move on over time. But prior to April 21st, the community felt very tight and safe, and his passing has hit us like an atom bomb and scattered our sense of self as long term fans.
I'm absolutely not saying that there's not a place for new fans - there is and always will be. But prior to his passing, anyone who had been here for a few years, we were here when what he was doing wasn't newsworthy, when the public weren't checking for him, when he really needed us to be there.
And I could relate to damn near everyone. Because I can relate to anyone that at some point discovered Prince's music and fell in love - that's all of our stories.
What I can't relate to is people that only decided to become fans because he died and his death was mysterious and in the news all the time - and then they come here and barely talk about his music but only about his passing. I just..... I don't get that. The music is not secondary to anything. If that's your perspective then you missed his entire message.
It's different. Prince kept us on our toes in more ways than one! But the org will always be home.
What I don't understand, is people who seem to associate two different things to make it a fact.
People who signed up after 4/21 might have become fans way before that date, and even before the org even existed (I did)! The org is a website, and people's experiences with Prince, his music and concerts could have evolved independently from this website/the internet. You can be both a newbie here and a long-term fan, "and that's a fact!".
I don't understand why this is so hard to accept for so a called long-term fan (and moderator). It seems to me like a very obtuse approach to the Prince "universe". I actually was a Prince.org member for a while many years ago, but I opted out in the end, because I saw so much disrespect towards Prince on this website, and this from those so called long term fans... And that was many years before he passed.
I certainly don't mean this to cause an issue between us militant (you know I like you) but I still think your comments are too narrow and do not accurately reflect Prince's philosophy of inclusiveness (love 4 one another). I do understand what you mean though with regards to all the bad gossip, but in terms of what you say about long-term vs post 4/21 only, I think those comments are sligthly unfair for some genuine fans who recently joined up on here.
I mean come on, were you even born when the "real" long term fans started listening to his music?
So to answer the original question, yes I still do enjoy coming to the org, especially when it is not spoiled by harsh comments towards its members or unecessary gossip. And these two are not solely generated by newbies.

Don't forget that some of us have come and go, have different levels of fanatism (for a lack of a better term), are coming in here for different reasons. It is difficult to judge anyone as long as they are not trolls purposely looking for negative attention or venting their personal problems by picking on anybody or any argument. If you want more substantive conversations and threads, start them and participate in them. Thats really easy.
Much easier than policing what others do in other threads you dont like.
You can create whatever discussion and environment you like here and discuss with likeminded others. It's always been like that, and will always be like that.
Exactly.
The thing that is so hypocritical about the ageist and sexist bigots on the org is that not a single one of them has ever criticized Prince for actually writing and performing in a sexually provocative way....not one.
But somehow it's okay to label anyone who discusses those things middle aged, stupid, etc......
In other words, it wasn't wrong for him to do it, its just wrong to talk about it?
Like I said, my super power is the ability to detect BS a mile away.

It is d
ifficult, I must admit also I was surprised to see that Prince.Org was described as safe and secure. A lot of relentless negativity was present for a long while.
My position is clear, if you like one note of one song tha Prince ever played - you are a fan, if you like everything Prince has ever done - you a re a fan and every single position inbetween.
It must feel a little hierarchical for newcomers to visit here sometimes and unfrtunately even great moderators such as Militant can sometimes be slightly misrepresented by the press as the No 1 fan when I am sure he would be the first to admit that he has probably, compared to many others, attended relatively few concerts and obviously people were queuing to have Prince sign their records in America long before he was born. This doesn't mean he isn't a huge fan, it doesn't mean that there is any ranking or levels in the Prince community. The people who are not interested in the musis and only the celebrity will fade very quickly as there is now almost nothing to keep them here. I have been here for 11 years and a fan for 27 and whilst I wish to thank all the moderators and founders for their incredible amount of work and effort over the years, all without pay, I personally now feel it's time to leave.
Sadly there will be no new products I am interested in. If Prince was a singer like MJ then having a vault might be fine as other musicians always created his work but with Prince he was a musician who produced and created everything so someone else doing it just has absolutely no interest to me. It will just be someone else's remix.
I've loved my time here but it's time to move on. I will always be a Prince fan, there is no-one else that interest me to his extent but now it will be a a private joy listening to his music alone. |

What?!? There will be plenty released that is all Prince. I have no doubt that someone will get the bright idea to do one of those remix with other artists things, but you can skip that. There will be vault tracks by Prince, completely finished songs and even albums... eventually.

I would actually be surprised if there is that much fully produced, fully finished music that hasn't leaked already. It would be great but unltimately the discussion of Prince's music has pretty much reached it's peak, now what's left is the enjoyment of that music. I imagine the estate will release a ferw remastered packageds and expanded sets but not a great deal else. Even unreleased tracks would just be interesting curiousities thrown together. |

- "leaked already" and proper releases are not the same thing
- there's plenty that has been reported on that has not leaked
- there should be a never ending supply of live performances, some not in circulation and some circulating only as audience recordings
Unless the estate or whichever record company ends up with deal screws up royally, there should be plenty of material to discuss for a long time to come.

That said, I also expect plenty of vault goodness to surprise us. If not, somebody is screwing up, because I have no doubt there's plenty of jewels left if those in charge know what they're doing.
That's the only variable in my opinion: the choices made by those in charge. I'll take the remix albums, endless reissues, rehashed compilations, whatever, as long as I also get unreleased albums, deluxe editions, outtakes, live shows, etc...

try to understand that other people who are participating on threads that you dislike not only have a right to make those threads here (not *your* website) but they also have a different point of view, so live and let live

you probably already know but there is was a perfect example of an otherwise fun thread in the PM&M forum that was disrupted by assholes who decided they couldn't stand seeing folks discuss topics *they* disapproved.
in the end, it was a few bullies, arguing with and attacking participants that resulted in the mess that thread ultimately became. the thread was locked, due to the antics of the disgruntled few.
i feel strongly about this issue. enough is enough already
so, to sum up, in conclusion i still love the Org but dislike its little manmade whirlpools of nasty, stirred up by those who wish harm on others
