HEADS-UP: Site downtime / maintenance coming soon

Hey purple peeps! Wanted to let everyone know that the site will experience some downtime soon (perhaps this weekend, April 4/5/6 sort of), while I move it to a new hosting provider. This is the biggest move in prince.org history, where I need to move LOTS of data, LOTS of configuration, ALL of the software, you name it, to a new computer. I honestly do NOT expect this to go smoothly! Best case scenario, we'll probably see a few hours of downtime; worst case, a day or two (??). I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about it, so you don't freak out if the site seems totally broken/gone when you try to visit. Once I'm all done, the site should be faster / more reliable on the whole, and cost a lot less for me to run (that will be nice!).

So I appreciate everyone's understanding, and I'll post updates on our @princeorg twitter and/or FB page as I have them! I promise I'll try to get it done as quickly as possible.

Thanks!

Ben

Would you be able to run the site with Firefox without making the computer crash, which is the scenario now.

it works fine on firefox on all the computers i've used, including a variety of OS's from windows xp to windows 10 and the last few versions of OSX including yosemite, and even on various versions of linux. maybe it's your computer

I use firefox and it's no problem to come here and read recent topics. But when I google up old topics, older than 2 years, the browser gets in truoble while loading and says he has problems with some scripts.

Yeah that happens when u click links from Google but if u wait a few seconds u get a script error or something you can click and it's fine to continue. Would be good if that was fixed.

That doesn't work with Safari on a Mac, everything just stops. I have to resort to Firefox for searches and then as you say, wait for the script error. Would be nice if it worked with Safari biggrin

I might be a little paranoid but this kinda, sorta feels like a situation where someone is going in for surgery, and even though said surgery is minor, complications can and do happen.

I guess i better say my R.I.P's now... Just in case. wink

Thanks, Ben, for all your hard work and dedication to prince.org.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

in my years of posting here I never knew there was a Ben who ran the Org. Thanks to Ben and whoever else runs the show! This is definitely one of the strangest places on the internet I've been to, and like Prince's music, it's the idiosyncrasies that I find so appealing.

.

i'm getting sentimental over here

Safari is shite though. It's easier to use Firefox or chrome which work with more things and have a huge amount of great plugins like ad block and no script etc.

I prefer Safari, it's fine for me, the only thing I have ever found not to work is the org's google search biggrin

Those with Firefox problems, if you use AdBlock Plus or a similar plugin, add the following filter rule to your settings: prince.org/_js/all_1

That stops the website from crashing the browser. I too have had it happen with all Firefox versions for as long as I can remember, and across all PCs that I have owned.

Ben: good luck with the update!

Oh wow! I just installed Adblock plus...then added the custom filter and it works like magic! No more Firefox crashes when looking up old threads via Google...awesome! Thanks very much! cool

FIREFOX USERS:

Try running Firefox WITHOUT add-ons.

I use Ad Block Plus, Ghostery, and a few others. I found that disabling ABP on the org fixed my Google link issue.

A good procedure would be to disable all add-ons and enable them one at a time until you hit your error. Chances are the problem is due to something relating to this.
