Why dont emoticons work from iPhones?

I get sick of editing just to make my threads / posts look pretty

And is there a trick around it

Yes, there is a trick. There needs to be a character or text of some kind before and after the emoticon. That is why many times you'll see me post emoticons like this:

* rose *

I should clarify...that's what I found works. I don't know if it will work in all cases.
