SNIP - what do you think of it?

When I first joined the site I had some of my conversation SNIPPED for reasons the Moderator explained to me. I understood after I was suspended for arguing back n 4th for it.

I've read the word CENSORED used around here. And have read peoples thoughts on the SNIP process. Good and Bad.

In a paragraph or less tell me (Pro or Con) your thoughts on the SNIP?

Let's not bring in accusatory and aggressive situations for the sake of coming to an educated conclusion.

I will explain from the Moderators point of view the purpose of the SNIP as well.

I'm trying to bridge a gap between understanding from Member 2 Mod, not widen it.

Please for the sake of civil discussion and understanding. Please do not include a bunch of joking around, please do not drag into this a bunch of personal issues that will just burden down the topic, and lastly do not make any negative attacking or 'constructive criticism' of any moderator or moderation, it will get SNIPPED.

Thank U

I think the snip is bs because moderators are biased as all get out. They will snip only certain people that they dislike while everyone else they are cool with etc they will do nothjing. So overall, the snip is bs becasue its SUBJECTIVE...all recent moderation has been SUBJECTIVE. Hell, the org has always had issues with subjective/moderation. Can it be helped? I dont know, it's a human foible factor. I like to think it can be improved but everyone involved has to take a look at themselves but people aren't to anamored with doing so.

No don't add this, I just wanted a more technical response. Right now I just want to hear members Cro or Pro on the SNIP. No advice on 'how to fix it'

Bottom-line for me, if people respect one another and give their opinions at the same time I don't have a problem with what they say. Some people jokingly call one another B!tch or Dumb-Ass and I used to be cool with that when I was younger ( in my teens to late 20's ) but, now I speak respectfully with anyone. From time to time I may say that n!ggz buggin' out or trippin' becuz I grew up with a bunch 'O' New Yorkerz and that's where I get it from but, I don't step to the mic at p.org with that. I don't wanna be taken out context what I'm sayin'.

I only do 'snips' when another member ASKS for certain things to be removed or 'changed' so to speak. I don't visit the site as much as I used to in the past and I don't interact as much. You can catch me on Facebook A LOT more tho ... Shhh !!! ... LoL

& I don't have any bias to anyone / the members on the org.

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

1.) that is a very generalized statement. You can't prove it. I've never encountered moderators being biased in that situation. It might look like it at times, but no one knows what's happening behind the scenes nor do they know the whole story. And just because U think someone should be SNIPPED doesn't mean they should. "Well U snipped me, what about him?" Is a embarrassed response.

2.) I am cool with a good number of Mods and I can show you old posts where I got 5-6 posts SNIPPED. And then the Mod suspended me because I insisted on arguing. And this person I was/am cool with.

Prince's Parade Procession http://prince.org/msg/7/306081

It was a thread I created and I got my hand slapped just like everyone else to keep the thread going good.

page 5 we got it SNIP SNIPPED and the Mod Mars23 response was

[This is too good of a thread to waste it with bickering and attacks. Keep it clean so we can keep it here. -Mars23]

If someone posts something- toward me or someone else- that is offensive, cruel, or totally unnecessary, I will report the post. Sometimes a snip is all that is needed because that person shouldn't have an audience for hurtful or obnoxious material.

I do think that if something is snipped, the poster does deserve a quick orgnote saying why...

A lot of times, people scream about "freedom of speech" because they are unable to admit when they (or their friends) are wrong and try to hide behind that. Sometimes we just need to realize we've crossed the line, and if we aren't self-aware enough to realize that, then we need someone to help us.

Unless you're snipping something for legal reasons like boot or video links or whatever in PM&M, I don't think snipping is necessary or warranted.

Possibly if someone posts something out and out cruel to someone (calling someone ugly or fat or making fun of their family, stuff you typically don't say to a stranger on the street because of its high level of offense).

Anything else and it becomes too "situational." Some mods are offended easier than others, so I don't really like the open ended nature of the Mod Gets The Final Say stuff and this includes forced-editing of posts.

Unless something is just so magnificently against the rules it is hurtful and painful to someone else on a grand scale or risks the sanctity of the site (shit Prince hates), then it should fly and the appropriate mod action should happen (ban/warn/whatever).

Agreed.

If we generalise for a second here, I'd say Prince fans are in general over 30 and smarter than the average music fan lol

I therefore don't see the need for snipping unless last resort. Even if an argument gets heated, that's life and unless it's derogatory, it should be left to resolve itself.

SNIP [again leave situations in other threads out of this one. I asked that people not bring personal issues into this, it just bogs it down. Everyone else have given non accusatory non personal answers.]

To answer the question, a snip should not be implemented simply because the "offending" comment is critical of site moderation/moderators. You may have the last say, but nowhere in the rules does it say that moderators are beyond reproach or that site moderation is not a valid topic of discussion. Especially in this forum, since this forum invites complaints or discussion about site issues right in its header.

How's that for staying on-topic?

So in that case, explain your snip of the on-topic, non-attacking post of mine you did in the thread you undeleted earlier today. You can't, otherwise you would have posted, along with the snip, whatever rule was violated. Most of the time in general forum discussion. We know if we said something that deserved getting snipped. But I do agree in some cases a 'why' can be given. Which depending can open a door for more arguement.

No one want's to have their words snipped, and arrogance creeps in saying "freedom of speech" and then the rules that we all agreed to get challanged.

Hey I'm the 1st to say I know cause I did it before.

I M O.

That's the beauty of a site like this.

Age ranges from (the youngest I know is 13) to possible 60+

People from different countries and cultures

Male & Female

Gay & Straight

Someone might say "oh I was just playing" And a lot of people disguise cruelty with humor. How do we determine anyones intentions. Words like arrogance are being tossed out, but no one can really tell if a person is responding mechanically or emotionally. Outside of the retaliation. That's kind of a human response across the board: most people don't like to to told what to do. Or 'rebuked' especially openly. arrogance and pride jumps center stage, especially in men.

What you might consider lightweight, might be cruel to someone else. So do we disregard that person because you/anyone thinks it's not 'on a grand scale'?

Do we know what Prince doesn't like or will have an issue with? That we can determine that outside of posting of boots? Not to long ago Prince had a problem with people posting pictures in certain places in cyberspace.

Thanks for your technical response. Definately stuff to consider

How is me asking you to justify your snip of a rational, non-attacking, on-topic comment about my own ban on a thread about banning NOT germain to the conversation you were looking for in this thread? It's about snipping.

Can you at least answer that?

OF4S: You were responding to something that happened in another topic/thread. I asked that we not bring other discussions/issues into this thread. U did it 2 times in this thread.

SNIPPED: Everyone else stayed on topic and kept it black n white, you continue to bring in other issues and just are bogging it down. You could have just answered in a general way you idea.

In your reply #6 you answered well: Got no problem with a snip here and there if it's for name-calling and the like.

But then you proceded to bring up other topics of deleting/hiding threads[Off Topic] then you seemed to have a problem with that and responded with another layer of issues-personal direct issues. I asked that you not do that, and it's just snowballing ...

I assumed when you asked the question, you really wanted to talk about it in a real way instead of pussyfooting around it, looking for positive reinforcement for your own bad behavior.

And forgive me pasting my comment back in. I was editing off-site and re-posted what I had written before I noticed that you had snipped it.

Maybe U should take a break, since in every thread you say how bad things are and how they are not going to get better.

I answered the question before I noticed that you had snipped a relevant comment in another thread that you had re-opened after the snip. My posts here after that were addressing your inappropriate use of a snip in that thread.

OF4S: I had a right to SNIP the comment Errant
