Wouldn't you like an org email account? Yourhandle@prince.org? Icenine, read this.

I think it would be cool if we could get email hosting at the org. Of course, we would pay for it. That way the org could be more self-sustaining.

I have no idea what sort of time investment it is to manage such a thing.

HEY! I have an idea! Ice wants to scale back his life and work at home (or something like that), right? We'll set up email/webspace hosting at the org and Ice can manage it. He'll be sure to make, oh, at least 35 cents a day on average. Those African kids can live off of that, why can't he?

There you go. Beautiful.

I think it would be cool as well, but I wouldn't pay for it. There are too many free e-mail sites as it is to make me pay for the "prince" extension.

I know the idea has come up before, and while Ben decided against it at the time (1999?), he might reconsider.

I'm not sure if it would take much of a time investment; rather, I wonder if disk space would be an issue. Of course, if people are paying for it, that might fund the disk space needed. smile

Yeah this was something we suggested years ago... nice idea. I don't really like the idea of paying for it though - as a site I don't think we are equipped to provide a proper "service" to people... if people part with cash for the Org, the relationship changes somewhat and personally I prefer the Org free.

Hosting Org email would be nice... but to be a free email provider for potentially thousands of people is a bit beyond us... I doubt we could sustain and support a service like that. Food for thought though.

Anyway I'm ian@prince.org so screw you guys! biggrin

perhaps there's some kind of system where people will THINK you have "prince.org" email, but when you send a message to that address, it merely bounces off of this site and comes to your regular email inbox. and the same when you send one, so it appears that it's coming from "aaronunlimited@prince.org"

as for paying for the site... well. there'd be alot of things to iron out if that were the case, wouldn't there?

for example, would those who pay for the site get less stringent treatment from moderators? and if I paid to be a member of the org, and my account got deactivated (twice this week already biggrin) would i get a refund?

things to think about before anyone offers up the idea of paying for access to this site.

Indiana University offers an email forwarding system for alumni exactly like that--you just tell the system your "real" email address (which can be updated as needed), and the alumni.indiana.edu mail server redirects the mail to your actual account.

Mmm. I hadn't thought of that. I guess it would just have to be in the user agreement that your participation in the boards is seperate from your business agreement, and if you get banned from the org it doesn't ban you from using your email, but also doesn't remove your obligation to pay for services already provided.

I think if it were to be done, it would really have to be viewed as something almost entirely seperate from the use of the org as it is now.

Yeah, come to think of it, I think I recall some discussion about this long, long ago.

I realize there are technical issues that would have to be looked at and dealt with, and somebody would have to WANT to deal with it, but with a built in 'market' this size already, it might be worth it.

I can understand not wanting to change the nature of the relationships here, but I don't think that payment for email services should have anything to do with use of the boards, so I'm not sure it would be much of an issue.

I KNOW you guys have prince.org addys, I'm jealous.

Not bad... but not creative enough. I'm sure you can do better than that.

That is possible as Ive noticed that some spam operators use others peoples addresses to send spam email so it dont come back to them.
