Not to disparage any of the people involved with MoQuake, but it seems from the statement that they started the site in order to gain access to Prince. They didn't get it - or much of it - and so they closed up shop. shrug

That's not how I read it.

I got the impression that they had hoped to gain first access to news and perhaps some exclusive opportunities which would place them favourably amongst other online fan communities, thus strengthening the popularity of what they intended to be a fairly serious music-based discussion group (ie. light on the pics & panties threads).

Instead, most of the exclusives have ended up with the likes of Doc F, which are immediately reposted at sites like the org, meaning that any advantage they hoped to use to establish themselves was severely hampered if not totally lost.

Presumably gaining access to their idol is a silent motivator for a lot of people who start fansites, but somehow I suspect it was far less likely in this case...

Why do you think that? You pretty much reiterated exactly what I said in your reading of the statement.

I think that it had more to do with building up numbers and activity rather than connecting directly with Prince (the latter being what I thought you were suggesting).

Given all that had happened between Prince (or at least his people) and HQ, which presuambly had at least a few of the same people associated with it as MQ, it's hard to imagine that they restarted as Moquake with the intention of getting close to Prince.

Sorry if that doesn't help clarify, I wasn't sure exactly what you're asking.

But the number one necessity in accomplishing what you're desciribing is to gain access to Prince, to bring exclusive news and opportunities to the fans.

Possibly I misunderstood what you meant.

I thought you were suggesting that their overall goal was to gain access to Prince, so in order to make that happen they started a fan site.

I'm saying that it seemed to me to be the other way around - that their overall goal was to make a successful, buoyant fan site, so in order to make that happen they attempted to gain access to Prince (or perhaps already had it), and thus the exclusive news and opportunities.

Obviously, from Prince's perspective, as well as the online Prince community, the latter motivation is preferable, but evidently his marketing engine is more targetted towards celebrity bloggers and social media at this time.

Prince already had Dr. Funkenberry to suck his asshole, running fluff pieces and running interference on the less-than-flattering pieces.

I'm not really sure why the MoQuake team thought Prince would want to replace that kind of knob-slobbing he was already getting with a forum where people might have some actual opinions to the contrary, no matter how "well-moderated" they were.
