Why some are banned and some are not?

It's a curious thing when someone gets banned for being inflammatory, yet others who are notorious for the same thing get to stay. How do you guys justify this?

If you see someone behaving inappropriately, you should feel free to report it to the mods. We try to be vigilant, but we aren't able to police every single thread 24 hours a day. We need your help.

Exactly.

It also depends on a user's history and exactly what was posted. If it's the first time somenoe's ever been reported, and/or it's something mild we're most likely to warn first before considering a temporary ban.

I've escaped bans by bribing the mods via paypal.

$50 usually does it.

I reported some pretty offensive stuff last week, that is becoming quite a pattern as well, and no one was banned.

If you're unhappy with the outcome of your reports, you may take it up with the mods who responded.

I'm not sure there's much more to say. Each situation is different. Not everything is going to have the same outcome.

I don't understand....so if I report something, and the other mods don't know about it, there can be major discrepancies in the banning of others?

That's what I'm getting out of your post.

I'm not trying to get anyone banned, but it is clear to me that some of the most inflammatory people are still here despite their records, so hmmm yourself. Don't you think there should be just a little consistency in moderation?

I'm not sure what YOU'RE getting at. lol

All I'm trying to say is that each circumstance is different. Each user has a different history and each reported incident is different so you can't really compare them, especially when we're not talking about a specific instance. You also have to consider what has and has not been reported on a user. As Anx pointed out, we don't see everything.

Which is why I said if you are unhappy with the outcome of reporting something, go back to the mod that reported it to discuss it. I know when I respond to a reported post I let the person reporting it know why I didn't take action if I'm not going to take it.

I'm not sure how advising you to orgnote a moderator privately concerning your reported posts is "the runaround".

Fauxie

We're only human. I imagine it comes down to mods not seeing something, or a mod having a bad day (we all have them!) or a mod knowing one orger better than they know another and using their discretion in light of that. Context and intent play a massive part, which is why that last reason is important. I can't speak for others, but personally I feel like I've often escaped bans simply because it's clear I'm harmless and cuddly, and because I post pics of my ass.

But seriously, sometimes if it's clear that something is tongue in cheek then a ban or even a snip can look quite foolish. Nobody wants that.

All I know is that specifically, one orger is banned based on prior offense, but another I know of is constantly offensive, even hostile, toward not only other members, but moderators themselves. This person is still here, and from observation, I KNOW that they have a record that has plenty of prior offenses. If you take the two of them and average out how often they offend based on how long they have been here, it is clear that the one who remains is MORE offensive. Yet, this person is not banned and the other is. ?????

There are no hard fast rules.

I know of permabanned orgers that moderators are well aware of who are currently still posting here. It's as much who knows who as it is who did what.

Bottom line is that it's like anything. It's better to err on the side of caution if you're not 'in' than to complain about it and just add fuel to the fire.

There's a fine line between baiting, flaming, and offering spirited unflinching criticism of someone's post; thus, someone's opinion of you and your past history will play into how they react to you.

I would love to see a straight, white, male, conservative moderator though. And a quazi-bi Asian moderator wouldn't hurt. Just sayin'

I've been told that as long as some people play well with others when they come back, it's not an issue BUT some orgers do play well when they come back and get banned anyway simply because they were banned in a previous life. I know mods can do as they please, but that just stinks.
