I think that we should be allowed to flame each other in the general discussion forum...

I love it when people try to flame me and I REALLY love returning fire... this is one of the greatest things about this site. The general discussion forum should be a place where we can flame each other and do whatever is fun, as long as nobody threatens someone with violence or murder.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with fun and entertaining insults and stuff... it is fun and it doesn't hurt anyone.

If you are really hurt by an internet flame, you have REALLY big problems with yourself and shouldn't be interacting with anyone. It is just a message board and you should be cool and not try to be an ass if you are not able to take what others say about you.

In short, be cool if you can't take the heat. Don't whine and complain when other people call you out for being an asshole.

This is just my opinion, of course.

Maybe there should be a section called "Battle Zone"

Of course you're entitled to your opinion IceNine - but right now, flaming is against the forum rules, and I will enforce them with an iron fist every time

If however you are proposing a change in the rules (specifically for the GD Forum) then perhaps I should move this thread into "Site Discussion" and let people comment on your idea there...

When I first started moderating on the site, I DID suggest a "Flame Pit" type of forum where flaming was permitted. But I guess the feeling was that it would easier to run the site consistently with the same rules across the board.

For now - keep the flaming to private messages please. You all know by now (from my incessant locking and deleting of threads!) that flaming people on the forums is not permitted.

Also Ice, I dunno if you remember the old "free-for-all" Org days when flaming was permitted... it was an absolute mess, and very unpleasant at times. I certainly wouldn't advocate a return to those dark days

As I say, I did propose this before... but the most obvious case against it is the way the Org was before It was pretty shitty and unpleasant. I certainly wouldn't want a return to that. Some of the flaming can take the form of deeply personal attacks, insults, racist shit, homophobic shit, sexist shit.

Now you might argue "don't post if you can't take the heat" and "we're all adults" - but that approach to running the site could result in it being populated by only the noisiest and most arrogant of people - with all the nicer and more sensitive intelligent people leaving. I do feel that everyone should feel free to post here without being intimidated by some dumbass forum bully, and that approach does create better discussion in my opinion.

I actually am not sure which way I swing on this issue, I'm just sticking these arguments up to provoke discussion on the topic.

I am for tolerating a certain amount of flaming. It should be like noise : the police can be called if it reaches a certain level. It's a bit like prostitution... whether you want it or not, flaming will happen... You can either waste your time trying to eliminate it or you can have some tolerance with efforts concentrated on the worst cases.

Seriously though Ice, that whole "we can flame about this topic, but not about this topic" reminds me of guys who get into a fight but then say "no hitting in the face!" It sounds like a nightmare to moderate too which is an important consideration...

How about we just redirect anyone in need of a flaming to your good self Icey, and you can Orgnote them as you see fit
