You missed my point. It's not whether they are going
to extremes to hide, it's the availability of multiple
computers--and hence, multiple IPs--that makes this
"solution" non-efficient.

I don't post as frequently as others, but I do watch
the site. And like Aaron suggested, you get to know
who you want to talk with and who to avoid like the
plague. If you're observant, you can tell who is who
no matter how many aliases they try to use.

The problem with multiple accounts at the org is in
how the accounts are set up. It is too easy to get
multiple e-mail accounts, and as a result, multiple
org accounts as well.

Personally, I say just wait. People will show their
true nature soon enough.

nod

heard ya loud and clear that time.. wink

both you and aaron give valid reasons for the lack of need for this feature..i was just curious why this site doesnt have this option...when other sites do..thats all...

i personally think some form of ID could be useful...i just think that this site was created for discussion and far to often people dont logg on to discuss, but rather to flame or take out personal issues with others...

how is this problem addressed by a person who can
access a computer from home, from a university,
from work, and from a library?

That's four different IP addresses, only one of
which may actually be under their name.

i just cant see anyone going to an extreme to hide their identity by running from office to library to home...

and if they are that hell bent on keeping an alias a secret, they deserve to have an alias...but, one slip and they are found out...do you think anyone would take this risk?

Well we have said the idea is a non-starter...

But regarding people with different IP addresses - there will always be a pattern. They have a PC at work or college (where even if they use DHCP, the more significant parts of the address will remain the same). They may have a PC at home using DHCP to their net provider but same rules apply. You can spot the patterns quite quickly.

As Aaron said though, word of mouth and just plain reading the posts probably gets the job done faster!

I could care less who has multiple accounts. If they want to be losers and post under different names cuz they're afraid then fuck them. They're not worth the extra time and effort.

Let's work on the issues with the site being down for more than a day instead!
