I think that there should be two mods for the mods so to speak, to monitor the regular ones - they should be the ones to complain to about mods decisions, lack of warnings issued etc. I'm also willing to bet that if all members were allowed to hold a closed vote as to which two to pick from the current batch of mods, there would be a great concensus (sp).
This is a idea that's definitely worth considering. I'll bring it up for discussion on the internal mods' forum. Thanks! One of the challenges we've always faced since we launched the "2.0" version of this site (six years ago) is maintaining a moderation system that has some sort of "appeal" process, but avoids situations where we have endless disputes over a particular moderation decision. Your suggestion may be the solution. Just for the record, "Senior Moderator" is really nothing more than an honorary title. (IMHO we've currently got some folks on the mod squad who deserve similar recognition for their several years of service.) But, I could the see the title being used instead for the system you've suggested. Or we could give the "appellate mods" another title, like "Ombudsman." Doesn't really matter to me. Once again, thanks for your suggestion. Matt (speaking only for myself) Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I have seen sexually explicit pics posted here constantly but are allowed to stay without a warning, snip or deletion from a mod, This is a public site which allows persons under 18 to join, where 13 is the minimum age requirement, which means a 13 year old can view those obscene pics. We know parents should be responsible for what their underaged children view on the net, but this is the real world and kids will "find a way" to get to a site of their choice without their parents' knowledge. Posts that have no profanity, harsh insults or sexually explicit content seems to get snipped, accused of "baiting", deleted or locked with a quickness. I think if they are going to allow obscene pics to stay without deletion or snipping, then they should change the age requirement to 18 years old to be a member or moderate the site more effectively. I hope when the new Mods come on board they at least review some of the complaints from orgers in order to improve the way posts are moderated; and if they snip, delete or accuse one of baiting, then that orger should receive an explanation by "pm", by the mod made who made the decision to do so. This way, the poster won't see it as a personal action by a mod. I look forward to the new Mods joining the current ones on board. Again, just my humble opinion. [Edited 4/13/08 9:00am]

quick question: when you see the offensive images or posts---do you report them?
i ask that because i have noticed a huge drop in reports to mods in the one forum i moderate...now, my perception could be wrong (could the decline be due to no longer mod'ing p&r?) but i still check out the mod log and it appears that less stuff is being reported... so i ask, if theres something you feel is offensive, do you report? That's the problem, innit? People bitch about offensive posts and especially pictures and are appalled that they stay up but do they report? Noooo. I've reported offensive pics I personally liked ( ) more than once because I felt that they broke the rules of the site, it's just the way it is. People need to realise they can't bitch if they don't do their part. For the (not likely but) last time folks: Mods don't go through all threads on their own looking for stuff to remove. Thanks for asking Sos. and since no one else on this site can "answer" for me, just to let you know, I have reported threads of this particular nature. When I have reported threads like that, the thread normally stays and so does the image(s). I was told one time that the "NSFW" was there, so apparently that made it alright to the mod that responded, but in my opinion, that acronym applies to those of legal working age, who use their computer at work and may log in on their lunch break;maybe they should note: "Warning: Explicit pics or content" on posts like that. This is just an "innocent" suggestion and I'm sure Ben wouldn't mind considering suggestions from members. Furthermore, sometimes there's no warning, and you just happen to scroll...and there's the image. Just one of the things you mods should be aware of. If some orger gets joy in posting those kinds of pics, and others enjoy viewing them, and that's what turns them on, and the site allows it, then so be it, to each its own, but including a warning with that post would at least inform other orgers of the content before clicking into it, as sometimes it isn't apparent in the post title as to what's contained in a thread. This may just be something you mods may want to consider in improving the site, that's all. I'm sure you're all open to suggestions for improvement..and just to comment on the orger who stated that "Mods don't go through all the threads," ... of course they don't, that is the reason why orgers report certain posts to them,. Anyway, thanks for asking,Sos. [Edited 4/13/08 11:32am]

I merely stated that the pictures are offensive because according to the rules, some of the pictures are. I am grown and can handle it. They don't bother me, but when I see a thread where someone is voicing their opinion and it gets locked for a reason that's not really a reason, then I'm just saying that the play field is uneven.

Quite frankly, I don't see that it matters, whether a mod is "active" or "inactive". It's not like anyone gets paid for the job.
One should be grateful for whatever help one can get, since it's volunteer work. If it's a burning issue, contact Ben, and suggest after 12 months, of no activity, the MIA mod be removed from the list.

"im going to disagree with the tone of june7's post above (no shocker there)...i think more people need to be questioning mod's decisions and we mods need to pick up the internal discussion of our actions. i have a major concern that we old time mods are becoming arrogant about our actions the longer we hang around....are we bad people? no...but i do get concerned from time to time that we might think we have the answer and are not taking the time to try to look at the situation from other's perspectives simply because we have been in our roles for a lengthy period (excluding mach and carrie) ...that's why i am soo excited about the new mods joining...gives us some time to reassess our own roles and how we handle situations.... so while, yes, we mods try not to override each other's actions (as june7 has said) it will at least generate an internal discussion between the mods....if a mod refuses to engage in that discussion then that mod needs to be removed...and even if the mod stubbornly refuses to modify their action at least it will get them thinking about their actions and hopefully be more careful next time out. let me repeat something: if a mod doesn't engage in discussions...they need to go!!! (that includes when orgers ask them questions too.) There really isn't anything wrong with June7's tone. Here's the post: "I know this seems strange, but we have an agreement and rules within the mod community to adhere to a moderator's decision on an action they've taken. If we disagree with such an action, we will contact them and express our concerns with how a situation was handled. On occasion, we've managed to get a decision overturned by the moderator who took action originally. It is rare if we, ourselves, will blatantly overrule a moderator's action without their knowledge or approval... and is actually considered uncool if we do so behind their back. We cannot have a successfully running "machine" if we do not support eachother's decisions. Just to let you know... we aren't going to go around overturning other moderator decisions on a whim. Not good policy. All we ask is that the moderator who took the action take the time to let the alleged offender know why their thread was acted upon in the first place. If you do not agree with the action taken, of course you are requested to take it up with Ben. If Ben does not answer you, well... then that's the end of it. Hope that helped." He's clear, objective, earnest, and is writing with a sense of purpose. Do you mean, rather, that you simply disagree with his statement? as the tone and attitude doesn't indicate anything amiss. Thanks, xplnyslf, Where've you been? I've missed your posts! Busy moving to a new house, reorganizing my library, getting settled again....

My yahoo mail account started bouncing everything, cuz for about a 3 month stretch I was never able to log in to check my stuff. I'm guessing that was when i got dropped from the list. I either emailed (or orgnoted - I forget) Ben about it once a while back but never got a reply. It's no biggie really, real life has been whupping my butt for a while now and honestly, being a mod here (or anywhere else I used to mod at) ceased to be a priority.
