Id say that some threads no matter how much you snip them have become so heated and combative that its just easier to delete them. Ive seen threads return and the bashing just starts up again.

In most cases, it's like what Mach and Teacher said... you know, hiding flames or personal attacks, or a thread that's gone waaay too wrong. We have to hide those puppies. nod

But, in your case... we do it just to fuck with you! mr.green

The first Prince BUFF thread was deleted in December, lots of pages with good pics and I'm sure that what was said on the last page of that thread wasn't that bad to delete the whole thread.

And then you have that thread of that purplebandana guy that got to be on stage with Prince at the O2 and the cursing and rubbish went on for pages. That thread got only locked, not deleted.

I still don't see why the BUFF thread was deleted and not locked or at least the last page deleted because I've seen that happen also.

So I pretty much guess it depends on which mod happens to be in a good or bad mood...

I don't believe you can delete just "one page". Isn't the number of posts that appear on one page like an option we all control?

Then it seemed like one page, probably several posts behind each other got deleted so it seemed like nothing had happened.

I assume that some of the pics that people refer to were pics of Prince and then the path of least resistance would be to hide them. Surely you see this with the assholery he's up to? hmmm

I'm sorry but I don't believe that the mods would hide a thread unless it's for a good reason. They don't have to tell you the reason but I'm sure there was one. Why else would they go through the trouble to get it gone? Nah, I don't buy it. People say that shit all the time, "things weren't THAT bad on that thread, I've seen much worse" but that is NOT the issue. You can't justify breaking rules by saying somebody else did it before so it's ok then. twocents

Teacher teacher, read all about it...

That thread was just fine, at the end an occassional annoying post would pop up between some GD-ers and M&M-ers. No big deal. Over night it must have gotten out of hand BUT that was somewhere on page 15 or so, so I would opt for deleting the last page, lock it and leave the pics to be seen by others. Such a shame to delete 15 pages of good BUFF pics for 1 page of hate

My philosophy is that, all other things being equal, I prefer to take moderator action in this order:

1) Edit the post by removing the offending material and replacing it with something along the lines of "[Flame snipped. --Matt]." That way the thread stays alive, there's no mystery as to what happened, and the poster knows which mod to contact if they think the moderation wasn't appropriate.

2) Lock the thread. This kills the discussion, but at least the thread remains for people to read. When I lock a thread, I end it with a post stating that it's being locked and briefly explaining why. (I also have a fondness for the lockdance emoticon.) Among other things, this tells users where to send their complaints. wink

3) "Hide" the thread, which effectively deletes it for users without mod privileges for their account. When I do this, it generally involves one of two situations. The first is the thread that's tainted from the beginning, should never have been created, and is probably pointless if the first post is removed. This would include threads involving bootleg trafficking, ticket scalping, hate speech, etc.

The second is when a thread has gotten so derailed with inflammatory stuff that it's not practical to clean it up via edits.

For me, hiding/removal is an option of last resort. Users often don't like it, and removal sometimes creates its own problems (e.g., new threads speculating about why the thread was hidden or which mod did it).

* * *

Also, like other mods, sometimes I'll temporarily hide (or lock) a "damaged," yet salvageable thread so I can clean it up and get it reopened ASAP. My usual entry in the mod logs for this is "mop up in aisle 7." smile
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

That sounds realistic.

But the first BUFF thread (thanks Lottielooloo1968) remains gone cry
Too bad. Since hiding happened overnight, I haven't seen what went wrong on the last page(s).
