dag said: This is a hard question how to solve this problem, but I am not into stickies that much because some interesting points and topics may get lost in it. When I see a thread running for 20 pages, I usually don´t bother even reading. So I don´t know.
But it´s not just a MJ problem. Looking at the first page of Music: Non-Prince forum, I counted 5 Madonna threads and 4 MJ´s. [Edited 2/10/08 12:57pm] There are a lot of Madonna threads, because she's got a new album coming out. There has been a steady increase in MJ threads over the past several months. Anyone who has an MJ avatar should be disqualified immediately from input. Thanks!

Generally I don't care when MJ is talked about. I love his music, but I'm not megafan who keeps up with stuff. Within the past year, I've noticed my reaction to the threads have been more of frequent annoyance. Sometimes I think it's an organized effort by certain fans to keep his name out there by inundating the forum with threads. I've never seen anything like this on other music boards. I'd vote for a separate forum or one Anything MJ megathread. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I like Anx's idea, though it may equal more work for mods. Actually, an Icon forum would too b/c folks would wanna question who the icons are, which threads go where & various other ridiculousness. There's been too much MJ stuff here for a long while now & it will NOT die down once that Thriller 25 whateverthefuck comes out. It'll just continue on & on & on, like every thread about him does.
My vote is for the mega-sticky & SOS, thanks for asking . [Edited 2/10/08 23:48pm]

Lock, merge, delete or point in direction of one catch-all sticky.
This is prince.org. If the MJ fans don't like it I'm sure they can find a dedicated MJ site to post on. I'm not entirely sure how many of them post in any of the other forums here anyway.

Prince would definitely try to shut down the Org if there's a damn MJ forum.
That's not a good idea. just have a couple of stickies.

How about this....MJ fans, just show a little restraint. If you see a couple of MJ threads already,DON'T start another one! Just add your comments to the existing thread(s).Obviously,if there is some real news to report (such as details on a new album,or a tour announcement),then go ahead and start a thread. But let's chill on the silly, pointless MJ threads.Let's aim for no more than two MJ threads a day,and maybe try to go at least *one* day without an MJ thread? lol.
I love Madonna, but I won't start a new Madonna thread unless I have some real news to report.Notice that I've been adding my comments about her new album to the existing thread titled "Madonna New Album",started by MikeMatronix over a week ago. So,can we do it,guys? 2 MJ threads a day?

Many of those MJ fans and many of the people who go into Non Prince, almost never go into the Prince section or at least post up in there. I hate to say this but damnit I will, why go to a Prince site and NOT talk about Prince? It's your right and I am NOT saying don't come and chat with friends or whatever one does on here but I just don't understand going to a fansite for someone and NEVER discussing the person for who the site is devoted to. Hell there are people who aren't even fans on this site and that puzzles the shit outta me too. Forgive me for going off topic but it really irks me. But back to the MJ fans, I don't why so many are here and never discuss Prince but will slam you with MJ or whoever else you can think of. That's just me and my take on it. [Edited 2/9/08 9:57am] If I'm remembering correclty - and I could very well be wrong - one (or more) MJ forums closed. Then it became like that annoying perfume commercial, "Then you'll tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends..." Down it spiraled. I like MJ, but I was being facetious about the forum. I don't wanna see it. There is a rule about multiple topics posted right at the top. Yes, there are multiple Madonna threads too but they're nowhere near as ridiculous as the MJ ones. I started a joke thread about the dude's tube socks, and it became a for real discussion abou this wardrobe. Agreed! As far as I'm concerned, there's no place for an MJ forum of it's own on a Prince site. I like Anx's idea. Sticky it up! |

That makes perfect sense. MJ fans are something else aren't they? I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

This what it seems like to me. Especially for someone who hasn’t done anything in almost 10 years. Not to mention many of the threads are rehashed topics: favorite songs from [blank] album, favorite video and pics of him shopping. There's nothing new so back to the same old topics. I stopped going to MJ boards to get away from MJ but it seems like he’s as prevalent here (on a Prince site of all places!) as he was there. I’m not surprised at how many fans or the level of interest but I am surprised at the need to start and actual thread everytime and MJ thought flits across someone’s mind. I’m listening to Dangerous. Do I need to let the Org know that I’m listening to Dangerous and I think Who Is It rocks? Um, no. And no, I'm not really listening to Dangerous. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I wouldn't mind a MJ forum so I gould generally avoid it, just like P&R.
Also the division of Prince:Music and Prince:More might be nice. If I want to talk about Lovesexy I don't really need to wade through 100 threads about "his lips." BTW sorry I contributed to the problem, but it was basically commenting on the problem. My thread had literally no content except Michael's name, and still it was relatively popular. i wonder if you can create a filter for each forum...like a pulldown bar that allows you to see all threads or specifically categorized threads...like prince:music or prince: general discussion.
then we could create a category for all, mj, madge, janet and mariah....i think that would be enough... is setting something like this possible within the coding world? Space for sale...

If I understand the idea correctly then it still sounds like segregation to me, which I think would be a bad idea. I think you already have the means to solve this problem. On the front page you have this warning written clearly at the top.... "Unnecessary, silly or pointless threads may be locked or removed at moderator's discretion. If you help flood the forum, don't be surprised to find your thread locked!" I don't understand why this warning can't just be enforced. Do that a few times and people will soon get the message. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

That quote (which I edited) always seemed to me to be about exactly this subject. Multiple threads on the same artist, and many of the MJ threads fall squarely into the unnecesary category. I just think mod discretion is the answer, rather than taking unnecesary measures which could end up doing more harm than good. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I like the idea of it, but should a Prince site have to look at changing its code to help renegade MJ fans who feel the need to talk about him 24/7 on a non MJ site? When Prince fans, who like to discuss all types of music, feel there is no point visiting a Prince site forum anymore because it has become too much of Jackson zone, then I think its fair to say there is a problem. The very fact that this thread exists shows how big the problem has become (and its not the first time its been raised). Doing nothing will mean things will only get worse. The harsh response would be close many of the pointless threads. I think its showing great tolorance to give the artist in question sticky of his own. Anything more than that seems complete overkill. .
