I'll just say this..... if you aren't even of Prince, you should just go to another forum. I've seen alot of MJ fans on here who aren't even a fan of P, I mean, come on! There's over 100 MJ forums out there

but then again, there is a "war" between MJ forums lol

I think it's best to just enforce a rule where no more than four or five threads on one artist are allowed on a single page of the forum at any one time. I think the "Icon Forum" is a terrible idea. One of the cool things about this forum is that you can have a thread on Madonna sitting right next to a thread on Erykah Badu or The Clash. An "icon forum" would kill that and create a two-tier system. Awful idea.

Totally agree, but I would restrict the number of threads per artist to three max. There are far too many threads about MJ (very very few actually about his music), Janet, Madonna and Mariah. I don't particularly dislike these artists, I'm a casual MJ fan, but threads on these seem to drown so many other imo more interesting threads. I would go for a 'General MJ Music and More' Sticky, and the same for Janet, Madonna, Amy and Mariah and see how it goes for the next 6 months.

And I don't dig the Icon forum idea either. One person's icon is another person's trash artist, so how do you define an 'Icon' without drastically diluting this part of the site, moving elsewhere discussion on certain, almost randomly selected artists? 'Non Prince Music' is 'Non Prince Music' and that imo is how it should stay - keeping it simple, with no special treatment for any artist, band or music form. It's just threads on a handful of artists that need to kept under control smile.

Personally, as someone who digs a wide range of music, I've found this part of the site rather less interesting in the last 6 months or so, mainly due to the glut of threads about these particular artists. Of course, a site like this is only as interesting as the threads posters put up, so maybe I'm partly to blame for not putting up more threads in my lines of interest smile.

Yeah, but we also had about 5 or 10 others. lol They weren't as used as much as the general Prince thread, but we had a very popular 200 page (or just massive) thread called "Is Prince Sexy". The other ones were related to other things- we had threads on Prince's movies in the movies section and so forth. That's why I *think* judging on the amount of MJ threads here, one or two MJ threads wouldn't work. But like I said, that's just what I think. lol
[Edited 2/9/08 4:20am]

i have heard of that thread, apparently it would put the buff threads here to shame lol

I visit many forums for different artists I like. And sometimes if there is another popular artists that is somehow tied to the artist they have a sub-forum for that artist.

Like a Marilyn Manson forum I visit. The non-Manson music section had tonnes of NIN discussion. MM and NIN are closely related and it's clear that a lot of MM fans are also NIN fans. So they made a NIN sub-forum.

A lot of Prince fans are also MJ fans. There is way more discussion in this non-Prince music section about MJ than any other artist. So if those who don't like MJ or are just getting sick of all the discussion about him then the best solution IMO would be to make a sub-forum.

Because this is not and MJ forum so the mods don't care if we talked objectively or negatively about him, a lot of MJ fans like that because of MJ forums they can only talked positively or they get banned or suspended. So a lot of MJ fans have started coming here to discuss MJ and told their other MJ fan friends about this place too. So I think an MJ sub-forum would be a good way of keeping those MJ fans happy and those who are sick of the MJ discussion happy.

IMO, it doesn't matter that this is a Prince forum. The admin and mods should be happy that it's extended to now become a general music forum that a lot of people who aren't necessarily big fans of Prince come to discuss music in general. This forum nearly has as many posts as the Prince music & more forum. I think it's a good thing that people are telling other that this is a great place to discuss music in general. It's what I would want if I founded this forum.

So embrace that this has become more than just a Prince forum and make a sub-forum for MJ because it's the only way I can see of keeping both the people who come here to discuss MJ happy and the people who are sick of the MJ discussion happy.

This is a great post. I still like June7's idea of an Icons forum, but this could also work well. wink

cha know, your comments are just as valid as anyone elses...even us mods...there have been times when actions have been taken because the community wanted it...nothing is being decided at this point...i think i am just interested in seeing how others feel.

btw: are the mj fans in music: non-prince really prince fans or just mj fans who have migrated to this site? and does that even matter to people?

What an excellent question cause I wonder this myself. Many of those MJ fans and many of the people who go into Non Prince, almost never go into the Prince section or at least post up in there. I hate to say this but damnit I will, why go to a Prince site and NOT talk about Prince? It's your right and I am NOT saying don't come and chat with friends or whatever one does on here but I just don't understand going to a fansite for someone and NEVER discussing the person for who the site is devoted to. Hell there are people who aren't even fans on this site and that puzzles the shit outta me too. Forgive me for going off topic but it really irks me. But back to the MJ fans, I don't why so many are here and never discuss Prince but will slam you with MJ or whoever else you can think of. That's just me and my take on it.
[Edited 2/9/08 9:57am]

I answered this in a previous post. I have been a member here for a year, I am not particularly a fan of Prince, but I am friends with the Twinz and I like the atmosphere here and the intelligent conversation. I am interested in Prince as well and like to see what he's up to. That should be a compliment to you guys.

I am an MJ fan, yes. On MJ fansites, there are often people who aren't fans but just wanna see what he's doing or are interested in him- I don't see the harm in that. biggrin

There are fans who love and are crazy about him.....and then there's fans like us lol We see his faults, we don't agree and support with everything he says and does, and we have a sense of humor lol

These two types of fans don't get along. Mind you, those fans who obsess over him are in the 13-18 year old range

Hmmm...
How about an era's forum:
70's
80s's (MJ, Madonna, etc...)
90's
2000's
etc...

or

forums by music style:
funk
pop
rock
etc....

That might narrow things down and keep things orderly.
Just thought I'd throw my two cents in...

Does this mean you have a solution in mind? Just for the record then, I think the idea of one MJ sticky would be far too limiting and drastic a measure. It's worked well for the Janet thread because there is a single focus of discussion (the album). With MJ, discussion goes from vitiligo to sales figures to favourite videos all the time, so a sticky would be too restrictive. I say just put a strict limit on the amount of simultaneous threads allowed on one artist.

I hate that idea, because what if there is breaking news, and the max thread is already met. I think doing that is just retarded.

It is much better to just do the Icons Section, or the Decades section, or even give Michael and Madonna there own thing. Everyone one says, "If you do the MJ one people will bitch." So what? So it ruins their day for 5 minutes? They will get over it. And if they have enough issue to let that piss them off, then they need to really get a life. I mean seriously, getting pissed off over an internet message board? In the big picture, it sounds as stupid as the one MJ sticky idea. lol

If there is GENUINE and important news then an exception could be made, but you and I know there's hardly ever genuine MJ news. 90% of the threads are blatant bullshit. What your argument really boils down to is that you want MJ to be awarded a privileged position because you're an MJ fan yourself (check the avatar). To be perfectly frank, it's people like you who are making this forum an unpleasant place. I think a limit of four threads per artist, per page is perfectly sufficient.

To be fair to (Milli) Vanilli, he's not one of the worst ones, but there are many who only ever show up for MJ threads, and add to the air of unreality that plagues those threads. You never see them anywhere else and they clearly have no interest in Prince. shrug

This is a hard question how to solve this problem, but I am not into stickies that much because some interesting points and topics may get lost in it. When I see a thread running for 20 pages, I usually don´t bother even reading. So I don´t know.
But it´s not just a MJ problem. Looking at the first page of Music: Non-Prince forum, I counted 5 Madonna threads and 4 MJ´s.
