If this warrants being permanently banned, then P&R should be empty right about now especially if history is a dominating factor. Because to me, this pales in comparison to the pervasive climate, attitudes, and free flying personal attracts that go on in there. I have to sadly say this puts the org in a whole new light for me and I would hope that ya'll take a second look at this whole thing. disbelief

I believe that a permanent ban is something very harsh. And something like that should be considered carefully and discussed with other mods. One mod does not know everyone, so to get a better view of the person and the reasons to post something that look offensive, it's best to check around with other orgers. Even if the mod thinks he knows the person.
Ben is an important part of this group called the General Discussion. None of us want to see him banned. If he made a mistake, it can easily be edited. Yes, editing all the mistakes out is a lot of work, but that's part of what moderation is all about.
I moderate 3 forums. I've never banned a person. I only deleted their posts. Eventually, every forum exists because of the people in it. permanently banning someone, means one less person in the forum. Every time someone gets banned, is one less. Eventually, who will be left?
I don't think Ben's character here is something strange to the forum. I think he fits here perfectly. He hasn't done anything that others didn't. So please. reconsider banning him. at least the 'permanent' part of it.

Nicely said. I honestly think that if the "Perma Ban" wasn't an option in the mod toolbox then we wouldn't have these problems. (That is a comment on policy, NOT on the implementation of that policy by any particular mod.) This doesn't mean that "troublemakers" (rolleyes) would be ignored, there would just be other ways of dealing with things...but give someone a hammer and suddenly everything starts to look like a nail.

That particular hammer just doesn't seem necessary.

It's also unfortunate if this is now in Ben's hands, as there might not be any attention given to the situation for months.

the PUPPIES! bawl

but yes, i don't understand why we're encouraged to take up complaints with ben when it's well known that he isn't very involved in the day-to-day matters of the org. i mean, he certainly doesn't post here.

also, the link to email mods through their profiles doesn't work for some reason? lol

well I can think of one individual you'd feel was rightfully permabanned.....

For such a final solution perhaps it should require 100% mod approval and or simply be left in the hands of Ben.

There are several people here now I would like to see gone, but that has nothing to do with running a community of this sort successfully.

I agree that permanent banning is not a necessary or even a good option.
When I come here I realize that I'm probably not going to like everything I see and thats fine. I just move on to something else. Only once did I feel the need to report someone that made a very nasty personal remark to another Orger. The post was snipped, apology made and everyone moved on. Not a big deal.
I hope that this banning will be reconsidered. rose

I think they should've issued him with an ankle bracelet and confined him to, say, the The Marketplace forum for a few weeks. Or one of my threads, which would be like solitary confinement.

Thanks for the room to discuss this, Mod folks.

IMO, permanent bans don't work. The almost-aforementioned poster who was permanently banned had/has a knack for returning under new accounts. and, even then, is usually almost comical in his obvious baiting threads.

Right or wrong, there have been claims of inconsistency on the part of the Mods here for years. It's a thankless job, always open to criticism and it's volunteer work. comfort Bless your hearts.

However, I like to think of Org perma-banning as the nuclear option, the last resort. In a time when Prince is attacking fan sites with (the threat of) legal action, there's no small irony to permanently banning someone from one of those sites -- despite how tasteless their comment might have been.

There will always be rules, and their application will likely always be questioned. I would only heartily recommend that this ban be a temporary one, and not permanent. Again, do permanent bans accomplish their intent? I'm not so sure.

Thanks.

perma-bans aint going away folks. lol

i think the only time this sentiment comes up is when someone who is perceived as well liked gets into trouble. however, there are some serious offenders who need to be permanently removed from this site.

now, i'm not an expert on this specific situation but in addition to lobbying for the removal of permanent bans i'd kinda like us to discuss how the community has gotten to the place where individuals feel it's okay to defy or ignore mod requests in the first place...or better yet, why is there such animosity in the p&r forum at the moment?

Of course they don't. When mods like a certain user, ones that have been permabanned for actually doing something to another orger, the mod(s) turns a blind eye. I have brought this up on more than one occassion. In the long run, I have zero problem with that. Just, if one permanently banned orger is allowed to stay, then all should.
