None of this surprises me.

I was patient with all his current malarkey until the shows at the Roosevelt Hotel in L.A. this past summer. I had plans on taking several friends who are musicians and introduce them to a live Prince show but come on $3,121.00.

And, even though I bought his last 3 cds, they kinda sucked and really I don't listen to them anymore. I come on this site because I've made some great friends and this is where I get my news on other artists plus the general discussion forum is funny as hell...

The music industry has changed--for ever--and I "get" Prince's need to control his image and all that, but going after fansites is just mean spirited and a bit creepy.

Prince, thanks for all the great music, while I was growing up. Too bad you didn't. (By the look of all your current antics and all) Thanks for opening my ears to all different kinds of music, with artists that thankfully do respect their fanbase. I think I'll go listen to the new Meshell record...

Imago

Well, this only serves to set me more on the linear path of de-evolving fandom lol

At first, when he sued the 7 or 8 websites in the 90s, I thought it was a stupid move, simply because most people did not view those fansights as stealing material so much as promoting the prolific genius of Prince. Sure, he had ever right to do it, as the material was all bootleg, etc. , but those fansites were like giant billboard signs that shouted "Hey, look at Prince--he's fuckin' awesome!"
But now, I'm not even sure he has to right to do the things he's asking? I mean, how are we supposed to refer to him? Is Parody protected speech? How far does he need to take it?

Somwhere between that first experience and a couple of years ago, I finally had to give up my state of being completely enamoured by Prince and resigning to the fact that "Sure, he's an asshole, but he's brilliant. I'll seperate the man from the music."

But now, even the music doesn't sound as good. Forgive my terse comparison, but Adolf Hitler was responsible for the Autobahn, which revolutionized the way German economy was setup and increased its productivity by eons. But he was still Adolph Hitler you know? I simply can't enjoy Prince's music the same way.

People are not stupid, nor are they irrational. If Prince wants everyone to praise him and his music, than the best route for him to take is to act praise worthy and release music worth praising.

I guess I was being far too hopeful when I breathed a sigh of releif after Musicology that Prince wouldn't do any career ending move (like he does after every big hit), but I guess I was wrong.

I mean, just a couple of months ago, the org received a memo to take down my LoveChunky picture, depicting a "fat" Prince on the cover of LoveSexy. It's as if Parody is not protected speech anymore to the man.

He has LMS--Little Man's syndrome.

I think fair enough to you guys, it screams out that hes quite insecure to want this much control. Its a toughie as although it seems extreme to us what he wants, but its still pics of him and I don't know how I'd feel(I don't even like being tagged on facebook in pics where I look bad on a night out) should a person still have a say in their image and creative content? Is it now impossible with the internet? The internet does go a bit far at times. But when youre a celeb do you then give up the right to fight back on everything? Would he argue he didn't want to be a celeb but is a musician who happens to be in the spotlight...

Prince Fans United is a great idea. All three fan sites are great. There is also power in numbers. I don't see what the big deal is about pictures, tattoos, videos. Look... we're a small but hardcore group of Prince fans. For him to treat his fans this way, is absurd. He doesn't owe us anything and we don't owe him anything. We just have our own views about him and his music. That's it. What's the big deal about pictures?

The worst part is how he goes about doing it... threatening everyday Joes with lawyers. That's too sad to be believed. Why do the rich and powerful always have to sh*t on the little guy?

I would like to, and expect to, at least for the ones I received (it's up to the other guys to publish theirs, but I suspect they'll be OK with it also).

Our first priority is to get a rational response to them sent back, first, however.

I fully understand Prince's desire to want to control his "art" (music) and support that as long as he has the legal right to do so. What has been going on for some time, as least from what I can gather from reading here, HQ, etc. is that NPG are demanding things that they do not legally have the right to do. (e.g. bullying and censorship). I do not support Prince in that regard.

It's a sad thing all around, but I am glad that HQ, the Org & Princefams are united in this. Hopefully there will be strength in numbers.

This is so sad. I was just about to get my "symbol" tattoo. I don't know now. In a way I can understand Prince. If you look at the history of popular music, so many artists have been cheated, lied to and totally lost control of their art. Someone else makes the big bucks and beloved artists end up starving artists. Prince wants to make sure he keeps control. Some of us innocent by standers get hit in this legal drive by shooting.

I understand that...but...there's a difference between protecting your art for copyright sake ...and... appreciating the art form or artist and attacking the fans taht love the art. It's like this...Im an artist. I like Picasso. So in appreciation of Picasso, I will try to imitate him by making cubistic art or videos about him. Therefore my love for Picasso is a form of artistic expression. Hence, Picasso lives on.

Since Prince's LAWYERS are doing this, his existence will cease. Who will support him when you cant see, hear or talk about him???? Who I ask u???
[Edited 11/5/07 14:05pm]

ZsaZsa you just hit the nail on the head sweetie! The whole point behind copyright law is for artistic expression. We are supposed to be able to take things from art that have inspired us and create new art based on that.

That's the part that's tripping me out. I could care less about the pictures and videos being removed but how the hell are you going to keep people from discussing you. Is it maybe because we are discussing on a site that bears his name "prince.org". If that's the case, simply change the name of the site and continue discussing him. Is the name "asshole.org" taken already?

Anyway, even if this site did shut down, people could always discuss him in a chatroom that isn't related to him or a general music forum that isn't related to him. In any general music forum, his name is eventually going to come up because he is a musician. I just don't see how he thinks he's going to stop free speech. As I said before, I could care less about the pictures and videos being removed. Those are his but speech belongs to us and that's taking it too damn far.

[Edited 11/5/07 14:15pm]

We could talk about him using the name "The Artist We Used TO Love So Much (TAWUTLSM)" or whatever. I don't want to be mean and find an ugly new name cause when I close my eyes, I think about the final aftershow, at the cover of "Honky Tonk Woman" (still allowed to write names of songs of other bands I guess) for ex. and remem neutral ber why I'm a fan (so far).

In the spirit of keeping things civil...I will just say that you are mistaken. Had it not been for the fans all over the world investing their time and money in his efforts...Prince with all his talent would still be in Minnesota somewhere and not who he is today. So we did indeed MAKE him who he is!

By law...Bosses HAVE to pay their employees and parents HAVE to take care of their children. We supported Prince because we WANTED to and if he's gotten so full of himself that he can't appreciate that anymore then it's up to us to show him the error of his ways!
