I really don't see what the big deal is with alter accounts personally.

I mean, how does anyone know that we're even being genuine with our primary accounts? There are creepy ass dudes on this site right now who troll married women, etc. for attention with their damned primary accounts under the guise sincerity and general caring. Their alter "ego" as they choose to present it are more damaging to this site than any of my alter "accounts".

I don't use my alters to troll so much as to exist with anonymity. When one of my alters starts a thread, folks can post on it with no predisposed opinions of who am or what they think of me. They simply engage in the discussion at hand for it's own sake.

Don't get me wrong--I love my friends, and love to fuck with my pissy enemies and shit, but an "imago" thread is sure to be jacked from the first 3 or 4 post responses, whereas an alter account's thread sometimes actually stays on track.

Plus some of my alters are abviously jokes...aka "EvilWhiteMules", etc.

I think altars can be confusing.
When a member who posts frequently portrays themself under another name: ALL FAMILIARITY WITH OTHERS IS GONE.
There's a comfort level amongst members who know each other, from interacting on the site. Things you can say and get away with, or smooth over if a line is crossed.
Altars still carry that familiarity, but are now in the "stranger" category. Wires get crossed.
Unfortunately, an altar was humoring me, and I thought he was being unkind. It would have been funny, if I knew who he actually was. (found out later)

By the way.....how many altars responded to this topic???
lol

Alters - should there be a limit ? Yes, absolutely. Personally I'm for an unlimited number of posts as the bottom line, that would eliminate the need for alters in the first place.

The post limits were imposed after a user seriously disrupted the site by "flooding" the forums. Similarly, we placed posting restrictions upon new accounts in response to the same user's practice of circumventing a ban by creating another account and immediately resuming the flood from the new account.

Perhaps a compromise would be to drop the post limits, but keep the new account restrictions? A user might be able to start a flood, but we'd be able to stop it very quickly.

Apparently, Orgers had their accounts automatically upgraded when they exceeded their post limit (back in the days) and went from Member to Prolific poster, thus getting more posts per day. There are alot of Orgers who are high users who have created 2nd or 3rd accounts so they can carry on posting. I have spoken to ben about this, and I although he doesnt like alter accounts, there is not much he can do about it. So long as they aren't abusing them, then I am guessing it is kind of acceptable. However ben would like to see this automatic upgrade to start up again, so there is less need to create new accounts. I think (and hope) he is looking into it as another thing he has on his list of things to do.
