When does a forum go "off topic"?

Since I have experience with polls here, I know, when asking a question, I'm attempting to get info that is beneficial to myself, and others, who are interested in the subject. I do the "average age of an orger" on an annual basis.(nevermind FatherMcMeekle thinks all I have to do, is add another year to the previous poll results)
All I'm interested in, is an answer to the question.
When a poll is conducted, is that necessarily a good time to post an opinion about the site and problems one has "in general"???? Which has no relativity to the poll?
(I'm just trying to use some common sense.)

there are no "polls" within the site discussion forum...there are questions asked so that the site owner and mods can get a sense of what "all" site participants feel about a specific topic. if someone goes off on a tangent then it's an opportunity for ben and the site moderator to consider the relevance of what's being said.

the point of this specific forum is that there be an open dialog for "all" opinions of this site's visitors so that this place stays an inviting forum for all its participants.

now, if the org wants to do a straight up and down poll then one will be created on its home page...which has been done from time to time.

umm, are there any rules pertaining to polls...period? the same rules for all threads apply and if someone wants to go into detail about a topic then they have the right to do such.

let me give you an example: if you create a poll about...lets say, the average age of an orger and create a thread asking what everyone's age is...lets say someone says they are 50 and they start pontificating on their age and where they are mentally because of their current age...is that going off topic? should the mods lock the thread? no...you allow the flow to go...

...and even when things do go a little off topic do you want the mods to so strictly enforce site policies that it stifles discussion? cause if that's what we you want then we mods can query and start advocating for the locking of 95% of the threads in gd.

there's a free flow here at the org...but if folks want things stricter then maybe we should create a poll and if thats how folks want things...and thats how ben and the majority of the mods want things then we can start our marathon of locks with a quickness.

confuse

should i have used a simpler example? okay...

lets say someone wants to know the ethnicity of the participants of this site...and let me help you hear so you don't have to rush to dictionary.com.

eth·nic·i·ty /ɛθˈnɪsɪti/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[eth-nis-i-tee] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -ties.
1. ethnic traits, background, allegiance, or association.
2. an ethnic group: Representatives of several ethnicities were present.

and

par·tic·i·pant (pär-tĭs'ə-pənt) Pronunciation Key
n. One that participates, shares, or takes part in something.

adj. Sharing in or taking part; participating.

so, if someone goes off on a tangent about how they have an identity crisis should we just remove the post or delete the thread because to some it might be perceived as "off-topic"?

or better yet...instead of dancing around the issue xplnyrslf why don't you share with us what it is you specifically want changed here on the org?

What does pontificating on the legal warnings on the 1st page of M&M have to do with a poll? or why orgers behave the way they do?
OR your suggestion I was picking a "fight" with Ian because I disagreed with his using a poll to air grievances. It was unreasonable. And it was carried over from another forum and an inapproriate attack on a moderator.
I was WRONG to disagree with Ian, even though his statements had nothing to do with the topic? and ....? Where the heck's Ian by the way??? The poll kicked his butt.....

legal warning? please expand that statement because as far as i know there are no legal ramifications (beyond sharing bootleg info and nsfw content) pertaining to discussions.

is it wrong to disagree with ian? no...but is it wrong to disagree, further the discussion and *then* tell someone it's off-topic? well, i wouldn't say its illegal but i would say its a cheap shot.

if you are going to go the route of "off-topic" you best be prepared to live up to the standard you yourself are trying to enforce.

Exactamundo. Take it up with Ian. He's the one who complained about all the busyness in the a M&M forum on a site where the TOPIC WAS A POLL!

I knew I went off topic, but wasn't going to let that nonsense go unchallenged.

Umm....did you read the entire thread? Because I have a creepy, crawly, sinking feeling.....you didn't. Nor the referenced threads.....Get back to me! SOON!!!

you are arguing semantics...i have already told you that if we want to create a poll without discussion then we will create one on the homepage that doesn't allow discussion.

furthermore, if you are advocating for folks not to go into detail about their thoughts on *that* specific discussion then you best start reporting *all* the comments on *that* thread cause a whole lot of people beyond ian shared detailed thoughts on the subject...yet you only called out ian...and you did it yourself when you responded to him...

so why didn't you create a separate thread when you felt ian crossed the line? or better yet...what difference does any of this make? ian wanted to make a point to the mods...just like you did. both of you are being allowed the opportunity to be heard? isn't that the objective of this forum?

Might want to check with june7 on the respect issue. Statements made by Ian towards him were unkind. Did you or did you NOT read the thread???? Answer me.
As far as nonsense, I call it as I see it. And I quote Ian: "Half the bloody page was taken up by multi-colored bold text full of patronizing warnings about user conduct. Is it really necessary? Does anyone read it?"
What does that have to do with a bloody poll???

I find it unbelievable, a moderator on this site, would defend someone who has been completely inappropriate towards another moderator, the site, using a forum for their own agenda etc. There's certainly freedom of expression. There's also responsibility, which Ian no longer has. What the hell does he care? About anything here, other than it's run entirely wrong. Nevermind using a poll to relay all his info.
I don't believe anyone's quite read the BS he posted. Go back to the "poll "forum and dissect it all. Along with http://www.prince.org/3/2.....reply#5. As far as I'm concerned he needs a foot up his butt. Housequake ring a bell?

Ian! ...if you're out there. We need some "ground rules". I'm not taking "offence", nor being "prickly" nor using "sharp words" nor "frustrated"...for the site to work better:

START YOUR OWN FRIGGIN FORUM TOPIC ON THE SOUR GRAPES.

I'm sure you're going to accept my calls for improvement and you won't have a "bruised ego"about it all, especially with my overzealousness.
Alledged injustices, as inconvenient as they may seem, involve your incessant BS on a thread that had nothing to do with the topic.
I'll quote you here: "Sharp words can be exchanged but it's never personal"
What made your actions "personal" is continuing to criticize a mod, and follow him (I know) to continue your diatribe.

I don't know you.
I don't know June7.
