Something about the news that i REALLY wanna discuss (please)

It's not the 1st time i mention this but i'd like 2 have a real discussion about it if possible, cuz it never happened.

From time to time a new Prince track is released or broadcasted on his website, or he appears on somebody else's album & that's not always mentioned on the news page.

I mentioned it b4 & was answered: "if u c it, submit it 2 the mods."

Well, i did & nothing was added on the news page. The last exemple being the "Live From First Avenue" songs now broadcasted on 3121.com: why on earth didn't this info make it 2 the newspage???!!!

If an article about Prince in a newspaper or any unrelated artist mentioning him in an interview is enough 2 b featured in the news, shoudn't EACH & EVERY song officially released/broadcasted by Prince the FIRST thing 2 make the newspage? I don't understand the Org's policy about this, what can b more important than the music itself???

A regular Orger doesn't always go 2 the "music & more" or "associated artists & people" or "NPGMC/3121" site forums every day but at least he/she checks the news page. I personally rely on this newspage as being my only source of Prince in4mation but i fail 2 understand the purpose of this page if MUSIC ain't announced!!!

Thanx 4 reading this wink

ok, well, it's a slippery slope with news items, and as the person who decides what goes up and what floats around in the forums, i have certain decisions to make and i'm still learning, even after three years of doing this on and off.

i do want to post a wide range of news items and sometimes what i consider a "window of relevance" can change depending on how much information is out there. if there's not a lot going on in princeworld and mavis is talking about him in an interview, then sure! why not post it! nothing else is going on.

but when a 7/7/07 or a musicology simulcast is happening, i try to put the focus on the main event. even though i have this philosophy, i would LIKE to think that i still find the time to add on the occasional "and in other news..." item even when we're in the middle of a big mountain of hype.

unlike, say, HQ, which i think features less news on its front page but in a more in-depth, feature-like manner (which i think is a totally valid approach, by the way), i think at the org we do try to go for a more "fark.com" like approach of adding a bunch of small blurbs that link to news stories.

even though i like to keep the front page updated a lot, i don't want to post the entire "prince: music and more" forum on the front page. i don't always think that updates on prince's official site are worthy of front page news. when they announce he's playing at 1st ave? ABSOLUTELY. a change of background music? maybe not so much.

i mean, if i include something like that, then whenever there's a "prince show" sketch on SNL, should i report that on the front page? what about when it repeats over the summer? and what about when prince music is used in the background of television shows? should that go on the front page? what about magazine articles? i actually HAVE posted info about cover stories in the past, but that was back when we had an image gallery moderator and we could put together a cool little blurb with a pic of the magazine cover.

i dunno - i try to keep a balance. i try to list the important stuff and throw in a handful of interesting bits, and maybe leave some stuff for people to discover on their own. maybe i choose the wrong things to use or to exclude sometime. it's certainly not a personal slight if you contribute an item and i don't use it. in some cases, like this weekend, i was away for the weekend and i had to book it when i got to a computer and slap up the most relevant stuff as soon as i could manage. in that case, i just looked for the "big" stuff to post.

bottom line, though: i really do appreciate EVERY news submission i get and i DO look at them all. if something seems like a GROSS OVERSIGHT, please orgnote me directly.

Well, many, many thanks 4 taking the time 4 this long answer. It really is appreciated. biggrin

I see ur point when it comes 2 selecting which news should make it & i agree with most of it. My point was that a "background" music on 3121.com, particularly now that technology allows us 2 record it on our computers, makes the said music an official Prince release as much as a MP3 track 4 download or a CD or DVD: if we wanna "get" it b4 it ain't broadcasted anymore we gotta know it's broadcasted & since we never know 4 how long it's gonna b bradcasted... u c my point. Same with the Cornell West album feat. Prince: if u hadn't put it in the news (& u did & i thank u 4 doing so), i probably would never have heard of it (or at least nor b4 Uptown releases a new Vault book, but in the case of a website broadcast, reading about it in The Vault one year after it happened won't make it easier 4 me 2 get the song: i'm still chasing these 2000 songs that were on npgltdonline.com.)

I agree that a previously released song used in a TV program or a very short live promo snippet on TV news isn't worth mentioning, but any previously unreleased full song that is available in any 4mat is kinda part of prince's discography & since lots of us here r trying 2 have the whole thing, the more we know the better.

So i hope u'll take this in2 account in the future but whatever u do, please know that ur work here is appreciated. I know it's free time lost 4 us fans fellows' benefit, i probably wouldn' want 2 do it if offered so i'm kinda grateful 2 u guys&gals 4 doing it.

Much peace wink

i do my best to, though i'm sure some submissions have fallen through the cracks, particularly when people don't use the "submit news" function (ie, when people orgnote me with news submission ideas) or when obvious silliness is posted to me via that function.

thanks for your thoughts and i'll certainly take them under consideration, though just for the record...any reporting i include on the front page is NOT for the benefit of ripping background music from prince's official site. that would be a MAJOR no-no, and i would not want the nice folks in paisleyland to think i was encouraging that kinda activity.

i'm just sayin'. no no no!

I understand ur point. Now, indicating the existence of a broadcast ain't encouraging people 2 rip it unless maybe u write "go guys rip this using said software & have fun" (which u won't & nobody can ever say u are nor will.)
As hardcore as P's lawyers have been (& i know they have) they cannot 4bid websites or medias 2 announce what's on 3121.com, which is a public website. If prince didn't want us 2 hear this music he simply wouldn't put it on HIS site! It's not like advertising bootlegs or xplaining people how 2 share protected WMA files on p2p's! It's simply announcing a music broadcast, which Prince used 2 do himself back when we had the NPGMC VIP room.
If people use available & absolutely legal (unlike contested p2p's) softwares 2 record it, it ain't the Org's responsability & it's still our civil right 2 do so: i don't think that in the 80's, Prince could sue a magazine if said magazine indicated a TV broadcast of Parade Live (that people could record on a VCR) or a radio broadcast of any song or concert (that people could record on tape) just because people had the possibility 2 record it which was both legal & their own responsability, as long as they kept the recording 4 private or "family" use only.
Prince has 2 know such softwares xist & that he has no way 2 4bid them, & anyway there r 100 ways 2 record a TV/radio/internet broadcast even without a software: it's endless & though i understand ur fears (& believe me i CARE about the org) i don't think there'll b problems just because u MENTION a broadcast on 3121.com: it can only attract more visitors, which is what Prince wants.

So i hope that cannot b a reason not 2 put this in the news wink

thanx 4 ur time biggrin
