the first time i got a warning on the site from a mod was for using the flipped off emoticon.

i thought it was idiotic. if the emoticon is offensive enough to have to threaten users about it's usage, why even have it?

shrug

Okay...very good point

and I agree, If it's on P.org then it's going to be used anyway the user wants

Since I've brought up the "fucking idiot" term in the past, my conclusion is: it depends on the context. If the interaction appears hostile then "yes". In GD people joke with each other and throw those terms out with an emoticon. In M&M....individuals get nasty.
With the age group and diversity on this site, there tends to be a reflection of how some in society behave.
The moderators, as mature adults, need to decide (and be consistant) how members treat each other and what the standards are. Some members need to be educated as to how the rest of civilized society functions.
Matt would be a good one to get input from...freedom of speech vs. freedom from intimidation. Some individuals ARE intimidating and it is an obvious problem.

that's my thought. if using it is grounds for being warned or banned over, why even have it as a sanctioned option?

I believe it depends on the perception of the person on the recieving end...

...If that person percieves a post... whatever words or emoticons are used... as a flame...then it is a flame ... to that person

and ... maybe...the poster maybe should be made aware of this fact to enable them to rectify the post before any action is taken.

.. After all... as I understand it... this site is intended to be a pleasurable and welcoming experience for all who use it...

... A little bit of mediation and common sense would go a long way to averting unwanted drama and ill feeling

Very well put. I would agree with this statement as to it's usage and in what context. nod

Unfortunately, some individuals don't know any better to complain when inappropriate behavior escalates and the individual is "flamed".
This site is viewed by alot of others besides members and interactions reflect not only on the individual, but the website as well.
Any member who observes inappropriate posts should report the situation to a moderator.
When bad behavior is ignored, it's then tolerated, and becomes the acceptable standard.

I've seen people get banned for saying fuck you as opposed to using the finger emoticon. Yet, I've heard that people have been banned for using the emoticon. I guess it depends on the mod, like everything else here

I don't take much stock in emoticons. I mean the brick emoticon is one of my favorite, but I don't actually mean I want the other person to be physically harmed. Well, unless they're 2the9s. shrug
