Debating a Topic

What Are The Standards??? People tend to attack each other and not focus on the subject at hand..... It's OK to think differently. I have a healthy respect for some orgers on hot arguements who stick with the subject at hand, and a level of disgust with those who resort to profanity and disrespect for differing viewpoints.

In view of the fact this website has ages between 15 and 57....everyone has their own learned behavior on arguing. I'm pretty sure there's orgers out there who can be quite convincing on stating their case...what's the technique?? This is a learning process.

I suppose it all depends on the topic at hand. Usually people tend to debate more poignantly and precise on subjects in which they have an expansive knowledge base. However when it comes to a subject that they only "feel" strongly about, emotion comes into play. When emotion comes into play during a debate thats when it tends to get nasty.

And how much leeway should be given? I understand it's up to the individual in the arguement to complain about inappropriate behavior. Unfortunately, some people don't question, or know any better. This is where moderators should step in.

I know, I know, I know.....the website functioned perfectly fine before I joined. I'm not offended at all by the topics. I'm disgusted by the way some orgers treat others.

Orgers are going to have to get used to me xplning bad behavior. I actually have done some good in one particular debate. Needed to be done.

Soooo.. there's different rules for other forums? regarding behavior. I find more civility in the P&R forum (in my experience) than other forums where "you're a fucking idiot" is an acceptable response.

Not refering to any particular forum. There shouldn't be exceptions to the written rules and standards regarding what forum you're in. People need to treat each other in a civil manner, regardless.

Whatever my opinion, I'll use effort to let the system work for itself....worked fine before I signed on....????WTF

I debate with a couple of guys on the P&R forum which is perpetual. Never was I denigrated for my opinion, with my perspective.. Spirited healthy disagreement.

My prob is truely nasty people you are oblivious to. There's orgers in the short time I've been here who aren't here anymore. AS a result of bad treatment. Guess there's plenty more to fill in.

Then again.. this is computer generated. Reading a book, traveling, enjoying the great outdoors. maybe reality sets in? Rethink computer needs.

What's written as far as rules specific for P&R forum?? I don't go to that site often, and when I have, my opponents behaved reasonably. If any forum should maintain decorum it's that one. Rather than have looser rules the standards/rules should be upheld.
On ANY forum, you can disagree without resorting to name calling.

name calling is not allowed on this site, period...anywhere. p&r's rules are stricter. but as in life there's still a bunch of gray and sometimes we dont catch every violation but we try to do our best.

You cannot be serious. Let's see...individuals have been referred to as having been"knocked up", "fucking idiot"...There's obviously personal info that has been revealed that is used against the orger.
I understand, if the individual being attacked doesn't complain about the bad behavior, why should I??

I'll tell you why. Some people don't know any better. Obviously the site can't be monitored 24/7. I still maintain the inappropriate personal attacks have caused some people to not be here.

And it's up to you guys/gals to protect the more vulnerable.
Don't think I have a problem with the Spats or ccollin88 types. I know the difference between bad intent and silliness.

The mods and Ben understand that there is a need for additional mods...and its being discussed right now. Expect an announcement shortly.

That's pretty funny. And I was expecting more, but have gotten used to my forums being moved around.
The problem is, the topic is now in "no man's land" and those people who need to read this, won't.
Everyone needs to work together to maintain civil interactions, and any orger can jump in and respond to inapropriate statements with..."that's not called for"..."you're not contributing when you resort to name calling"
etc.
There's a large population of people on this site and some "learned behaviors "need to be unlearned.

I've reported this kind of response to mods even when I wasn't involved in a discussion as it seemed inappropriate. They're good about snipping things you might find offensive, but if you don't report it, these things slide all the time.

And it takes ALL of us to keep it in check. Unchecked, it becomes the acceptable standard.

Unwilling to participate in that kind of environment. Just distasteful.

When I've stated my opinion on inappropriate behavior....I'M the one who gets snipped.
