Nobody gets mad when the news stations report on murders, theft, and other illegal activities. In fact, it's encouraged.

no one owns music
its God's
thats where it came from in the first place right ?

i have never understood this whole bootleg hatred thing
i would be happy to know that people were sharing my music
whether they were paying me or not

i dont make music for money

i can understand it must piss prince off to know that people he hired or whatever - stole tapes and leaked them

but maybe thats why we should be careful who we hire
and careful about our intentions
as to why we are in the music biz

for me personally
i am in the music biz to bring joy to people
i cant put a price on that
and if someone stole my shit and went and made money off it
then i guess when they meet their maker
they will have to deal with their own conscience

it doesnt seem right to me to force people to deal with their own conscience
in courts of law
where lawyers making money
dont actually care about music at all

call 1800Love4OneAnother
not a lawyer

Good. I wish I could say the same but I just want to say this thread threw me off a little. Everybody has their thing that they do that's wrong and they know it. I just don't really see the point of referring to people as thieves.

I dunno. There are greater issues than this on the Org.

so how much money did prince get from you in exchange for his copyrighted intellectual property when you downloaded his new album before the release date and through unauthorized channels?

truly, i'm not trying to be 'holier than thou' about this.

but remember who prince is, and his history regarding this particular issue. i mean, this is the guy who shut down entire websites back in the day, and who has led an ongoing campaign against bootlegs. he's publicly expressed the fact that bootlegs aren't really cool with him. in fact his legal team has gone after people who trade in bootlegs

and what i see happening now is that poeople who have heard the album are giving it 'bad' reviews, and likely won't bother to actually BUY the album when march 21st rolls around.

seriously, ain't it a shame?

seeing as the album has not been officially released, none. when i can, i'm buying five. if it makes you feel better, i can send paisley park ten bucks for listening to the music before it came out.

you also assumed that i had downloaded the album. i don't believe that I said i had. i said i had heard it but i forget you are the queen of sweeping generalizations about people so i'll get off your lovely thread and leave you to your perfect world where you have never done anything remotely a little bit bad ever.

i have never ever..ever purchased any boots. i have recieved a ton of them and have never heard any of them with one exception.

Wendy & Lisa...

some of us wendy and lisa fans found out that bootleggers were selling Friendly Fire at extremely high prices so we decided to collect all of them and share them at no cost. i have mailed copies to friends far and wide in my efforts to prevent booters from profiting from them, on my own dime. and we informed wendy and lisa what we were doing..this was one of the reasons i started girlbros. radio so that folks could listen to the hard to find stuff without paying booters for them.

i've done the same with the revolution era music that is featured on girlbroslandia...i reduce the quality of the mp3 to stereo so that if prince ever were to release the music folks would want to buy the good quality stuff..and all of that stuff was fan shared..and im pretty strict, only revolution era (and keep the quality crap).

but beyond that...nope. i dont do boots. and when folks ask me to burn them copies of eroica, fruit at the bottom or wendy and lisa i always refer them to amazon or somewhere else online.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought Prince didn't like other people making money from his music by selling boots. At least with the download thing, those people are no longer profiting.

Oh and what about the scenario that people buying the album after reading 'good' reviews when first they wouldn't bother buying it.

i'm sorry but this isn't making sense to me. what's your point? are you saying that because the downloads weren't through profit driven channels they're ok?

and i think as far as the 'good' reviews go, the reviews issueing from legitimate listening parties are sufficient to carry the day.

now why am i defending myself for objecting to the theft of intellectual property?

To start with your last point: My comment was by no means ment as an 'attack' so no 'defence' is asked for.

You stated a point with "remember who prince is...that bootlegs aren't cool with him" and I thought Prince was not that much against people owning them, but disliking the sellers making a profit. By downloads no boot-sellers are profiting, so (IF I remembered correctly) I felt that nullified your Prince-doesn't-like-it argument. In those days, boots were mainly live-registrations of poor quality btw, not unreleased material.

thanks for the clarification.

personally, i think that's a pretty weak attempt to justify what's happened. if prince wanted people to access his work in this fashion he'd have done just that, publicly. i think that's what the 'legal' listening links are for.

At the end of the day, you know a large majority of the people who downloaded the leaked copy are gonna end up buying the full album anyway. So what is he losing? It's pretty silly and petty to start suing people for downloading it between now and the release date.

People who dig Prince enough to even bother hunting down an early copy of the album, are generally the same people that buy all his stuff anyhow.

People were just excited about the new music, he should be flattered.

i have been more active in posting about prince since getting the album early than i have been in years, cause it's the first album he has put out since the gold experience that i even like.

and i will be buying a copy come 21st.
