Even some of Matt's replies to his extremely unpopular Shausler decision could be called flame warrish

Some of my replies may have been a bit flippant, but none of them were intended to be abusive.

What happened to "just ignore it" or "send an orgnote"?

Good idea in theory--"ignore it" was my standard response when people complained about certain news items at the old .org--but it seems not to work very well on the Internet. I guess it's just too easy to fire off stuff and send it around the world by pressing "send." I've done it myself sometimes and later regretted it.

6. The reaction to the locking of Shausler's thread was overwhelming. Now other threads had been locked before with very little or no controversy. I make restrictive decisions in my work all the time, and I have learned that when one of my decisions turns out to be extremely unpopular, it's not the time to cover my ears and look away or get all offended. I try to find out what was different about it, why it was met with such venom, and I listen with as much detachment as I can muster. I don't go around quoting Mel Brooks, saying "It's good to be king." Oooh... I know Prince.Org isn't a paying job, but that's immaterial if you care about the quality of your decisions.

None of us said "it's good to be king"--that was someone else responding to one of my posts. I followed up by suggesting that being a moderator is more like a janitor than a king. smile

You're correct in suggesting that the Shausler incident raised some issues about moderation for me, Ben, and the rest of the prince.org staff to consider. It's unfortunate that it happened the way it did--I still really don't understand why people got so upset about it--but that's water under the bridge now. Hopefully we'll all learn something from this.

For the record, I do stand behind my decision to lock Shausler's thread. Sometimes being a moderator (or having any other position with responsibility) requires one to make unpopular decisions.

So you didn't quote Mel Brooks? That sucks! smile

We'll have to disagree on the lockability factor of Shausler's thread, but I certainly understand the need to make unpopular decisions.

My post was about the impressions that can be created by moderators, most of the time unwittingly. The way I see it, what's important is that you be active about what you want. "Get freaky"?...hey, if you can't say voomio vomm, it ain't very freaky..

I suggest Ben rewrites the intro to the GD forum to read as follow :

Get Wild. Get Loose. Get freaky, or maybe not that freaky. . I've got a day job.

Thank you for your kind response, Matt.

I just can't stand this whole okayplayer "invasion" thing. How was it an invasion? Someone please explain. And how is Ben supposed to be responsible for anybody's actions? It's the friggin internet, he's not going to come to our houses and give us a spanking for posting on another site. I've checked out okayplayer and in the general discussion 99% of the threads are nonsense, just like here. There was no harm done there's no need for anybody to come here and cause trouble and be a retard.

Icenine, Pook and Uglybrowneyes for some reason (?) orchestrated the one day destruction of Okayplayer's General Discussion board by posting thread after thread there, in which they made fun of Okayplayer members' use of language, interests etc etc.

Okayplayer.com only has seven page memory of threads, so this "attack" caused Okayplayers to lose all their ongoing threads and caused major headaches for the site's moderators.

These facts seem skipped over when anti-Okayplayer sentiment is raised here... rolleyes

THE ORG IS DEAD...
LONG LIVE THE ORG.

I'm sad to see the GD forum go,(albeit temporarily) I've had many a good discussion there.

But let's be honest...it had it coming.
The GD forum was spiralling out of control. There were just far too many threads being created every day, the interesting ones were being buried under the sheer volume of new posts. Not only that, but the other forums were slowly dying in it's wake. What's the point of making an interesting new post in one of the other forums if no-one is going to read it, because everyone is still wading through the GD forum? Or that's what everyone felt, and therefore it became a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but..
Surely if the number of new posts could be regulated somehow, then the main problem with the GD forum could be solved. If everyone could only have X amount of new threads per week, then maybe more restraint and consideration would be used before starting yet another thread.

I must admit, I don't know enough about running a site like this to know if this is possible or practical, but something along those lines seems to me to be the most practical solution.

Prince.org (formally the PPML) has been around for a long time. It was originally a place where people who appreciated Prince's music and talent could converse about that subject matter. The posts were generally interesting and informative. The novice could learn a good amount about the music/boots/associated artists/etc and share the ride and experience. The digest was moderated with minimal complaint. When I found it on the net 6 years ago, I couldn't wait to get online to see if there was a new digest.
Before the net, the music belonged to me alone. I was intrigued to share it and find people with the same interest, with loads of information on the subject matter.

The new site with it's discussion threads can be informative at times, especially with the ability to post information at will.
Information regarding Prince is readily available and quick to access (from a news perspective) and it has been interesting at times to discuss varied topics with people who share a common interest... That being Prince's music.
The topics at times have been entertaining and risqué, but the people don't seem to have a modicum of respect for each other anymore.

Unfortunately, the rude, immature, and childish posts have taken over the site, detracting from it's purpose and enjoyment. The music has definitely been maturing over the years, but it seems that the fan base hasn't. That's unfortunate. I always thought that I was on different level than the general public since I could recognize genius when I heard it, and I assumed that others were there also.
I remember why I came here, but have been wondering if I'm still in the right place.

I can still get news on the site which is what my involvement has been reduced to over the years. I only occasionally post if there is a topic I find interesting although there are few and far between. I don't think there is anything that I can get out of the community more than what I already know about the music and history.
After you've heard all the songs, and know the history, what's left is the personal experience of the music. That's where I started.

The resource for information will always bring me here. Hopefully I can find some without sifting through loads of bs.
I won't miss these general forums if the moderators choose to take them out, and I don't care if the majority of the people abandon the site.
It was around before most of them and I'm sure will continue as long as Ben can stand it.

Grow up folks. If you're into verbal masturbation, maybe you could try a Michael Jackson website.

It's been said before, but I'm gonna say it again anyway. All of you who are complaining that there aren't any discussions on Prince anymore could easily make up Prince topics of your own...to *gasp* be discussed. If you have, and you didn't get many replies, then apparently others didn't want to discuss that particular topic -make up a new one or join in on one...there are many. But, don't sit there and stew about those who were in the general discussion forum talking about general discussions.

I agree, Azure...You cannot make people post comments on the threads of your choice...I believe...yet, it seems, to me, that there are members of Prince.org whom are looking for a way to do just that. smile

The only way to have a good, popular and busy site is to keep and give what the people (the ones who are giving the site exposure, etc.) what they want. Yes there was getting to be some nonsense on this site lately, but to shut down one of the most popular and BUSY forums i think was a bit harsh... and for this long!!! The org is dead now... Maybe Ben just needed a break, or the monitors and ben were just having a bit of internet muscles and decided to slow us down.. whatever the case is.. i really hope the general discussion forum opens soon!!!
