Generally I only really care about the opinion of those close to me. That doesn't mean I will say and do things to please people and make sure their opinion on me is favorable.

I think that Ben cares what people think too, but not individuals. If a lot of members of this site think something should change I'm sure he'd consider it unless it's financially or technically impossible. He has tried out things in the past because people requested it.

while it is true that privately owned sites (such as this one) are NOT obligated to uphold some kind of constitutional 1st amendment entitlement for site members, here's the rub that keeps ben and us mods in check:

if we abuse our "powers" to lock, ban, hide, delete, etc., then people will leave the org and go somewhere else to play.

by the same token, if we NEGLECT our responsibilities and let people do any old damn thing they wanna do, regardless of who suffers for it, then people won't feel like this is a "safe" place, then people will leave the org and go somewhere else to play.

so. the mods keep the users in check and the users keep the mods in check. despite the alarmist hue of "there's no free speech on the org", there IS actually a copacetic relationship between the mods and the users that has been functioning quite well, thank you very much.
