It seems to me like threads get locked for no good reason!

Im reading threads that pose no threat or insult to anyone but then they get locked because a moderator says, "Ive seen enough" LOCK

Now I realize that this is not a democracy but I cant help but to feel that some of you take your powers a wee bit too far.

A thread to name one about a potential new Prince album. Very heavy handed and pompus moderation if you ask me.

i locked that thread.

the thread in question was allowed to keep running for a very long time before we finally decided the original information was a hoax, at which point i locked the thread and then later added a comment to the original post indicating that the information posted was not true.

we've always done this, and at least as long as i'm around, we always will.

we're not in the business of posting false information here. we may pursue a rumor that seems particularly possible or interesting, but when it has been established as false, we take steps to squash disinformation ASAP.

you may see this as "heavy handed". others who don't frequent the site and aren't as familiar with the usual personalities and behaviors on the org may see this kind of action as "helpful".

i'd rather maintain accurate information for those who want it than keep hoaxes and rumors afloat so everyone can get their joke in. maybe that IS a heavy-handed attitude. "guilty."

With regards to the rumor threads, I'm not speaking for any other mods or ben himself when I say this, but I think they're bad for the site. It's one thing when it's an obvious parody, or something that's not taken seriously. But when people try to create announcements, or pass bogus new album info off as legit, it makes this site about as reliable and useful as a tabloid.

There are quite a few orgers who do in fact have some connections with previous bandmates, associates, live in proximity to Prince's home or studio, etc... that can provide some great news here. In fact, there have been many times where news was posted here long before it even appeared on NPGMC.

If someone's gonna post something significant like the tracklisting for an upcoming prince album, at least back it up by citing a reliable source, so we can confirm it.

so if you guys want to continue having fun....cause im all for these bogus threads then try putting some type of disclaimer letting people know the thread is all in fun...

kinda like the "fake" tracklist threads..

the fake album rumors and fake tracklists threads are my favs here at the org...weve long championed keeping these threads open....but in order to do that we need to respect what tom mentioned in his post.

so, we compromise...thats the glory of effective management..something the current US president could learn from...
