Regarding the hijacking of accounts

For anyone who's bored and thinks it might be fun to hack someone's account and cause a little havok on the Org, let it be known right now that this is behavior that will cause you to be punished to the fullest extent possible.

This will include a lifetime ban and a permanent and instant deactivation of any accounts we ever are able to identify as connected to you. This will also include any possible "identity theft" punishments that may currently apply above and beyond the Org's site rules.

Basically, however we can put the smackdown on you for this, we're gonna do it.

So don't do it. Don't.

Questions?

Whoever is doing it has been banned before and they're still continuing. I don't think they'll be very impressed by a lifetime ban.

Sounds like this site needs a security update.

actually, we've just been using the lurking emoticon for security on this site, and it seems to be doing just fine.

It'd probably be real cool if certain banned Orgers stayed banned. One such person known for this type of shit is back and practically everyone knows it.

we're able to do that in some cases. in other cases, it's not so cut-and-dried.

but usually, the sneakier someone thinks they are, the more they end up exposing themselves in the long run...

Change your password to a combination of letters and numbers, and make sure it's at least 6-8 characters. Try not to use something like "apple1234", pick something more nonsensical like "a3b45rt7". Also, if you are meeting up with other orgers (such as at these "invasions") and you're logging into your account from someone else's comuter, you should really change your password as soon as you get home.

Lifetime bans aren't that much of a deterrant though, cos these people keep coming back. Maybe it's time to take this to the police then?

To do that, we'd probably need to track down the user and get in touch with his/her local law enforcement agency. Technically, the FBI and the Secret Service have jurisdiction to deal with this kind of thing, at least under federal law, but I suspect that both agencies are too busy with more serious incidents. In fact, there's no guarantee that the local law enforcement agency would do anything. Or they might just refer us to the feds, even though there are state laws against computer hacking. neutral

I get the picture... so there are laws but nobody to enforce them. I was just curious as to what it would take, thanks for answering Matt. smile

Voidra

There are laws and there are people to enforce them but there are certain criteria that have to be met before the authorities will get involved. Unfortunately, there is a bit more to it than most people realize.
Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

I would never do something like that to a person, even if I had the capability.
