Org's policy on media sharing?

Ok, just wondering - my link to a download of Mariah's new single got snipped. Now, links to this single and other media have been posted many times before, without incident. You guys even had a huge mixtape contest over in GD. So, I'm wondering why that one link got snipped, and how you know if you can or cannot post download links. Thanks.

Anxiety

*MY* criteria for snipping a link to media is that i will snip anything that's been 'leaked' or that could be considered 'bootlegged'. i think our policies on this are a work in progress - don't take my criteria as gospel for the whole org - let's see what the other mods say.

I didn't mean to single you out. I was just going through the threads and came across it.

From the forum rules it mentions "Individual authors of prince.org messages are solely responsible for their content, and prince.org isn't interested in encouraging any illegal activity. Specifically, don't solicit to violate copyright law (via trading mp3s/CD-Rs/bootlegs, or whatever),"

Most of you using your own personal web sites to host files, or setting up accounts on Yousendit, or Rapidshare, are hosting the files elsewhere. So perhaps the Org is generally exempt from backlash, legal threats, or lawsuits if there ever were any.

Moderating of such content has been inconsistent on here. There have been instances where I saw links to tracks and turned a blind eye to it. I'm not 100% sure whether we can safely share links to tracks on the org, so on occasion I've been snipping them simply to discourage it overall.

Now's a better time than ever to iron this out in detail so we're all on the same page... Orgers, Mods, Ben? What should we do with this???

I can't clarify the legal aspects of this, but all the major music forums I visit have entire sections devoted to media downloads, and haven't had any problems as far as I know. I wouldn't recommend doing that for Prince, considering how litigious he is lol , but for the Music: Non-Prince allowing download links might be an option if it's legal wink

a boot is a boot is a boot..prince or not..i snip it....the fact of the matter is, regardless of what other websites or doing, if the labels decide to make an issue of websites linking to illegal bootlegs it could result in ben needing legal assistance (ie dishing out cash)..its just not worth the risk...

now, linking up to legally traded media..well thats obviously within site rules.

my two cents.

I think that if ya don't have written permission, from where you got it from, to post the link on here - then I would say don't post the link. I don't want Ben to get his ass sued off for copyright or piracy..... My 2 cents.

I will say, I wondered about this while the contest was goin on... And while I wasn't about to ruin anyone else's fun, that's a big part of the reason I never attempted to post a link to my own mix. Just didn't want to cause any trouble. shrug

The mods each seem to have a different policy, so maybe it was deemed "OK" in GD.

no, im gonna disagree with that.....site rules dictate that links to boots are not permitted.....

uniformity is key amoungst the mods (something that is hammered away in the mod spa)..more then likely nobody really noticed it..(which seriously isnt that hard to do when your participating in something as exciting and fun as this example..i know i looked at it and never thought, "hey, against site rules...REPORT!! REPORT!! it was more just, "hey, what an awesome idear...koodos to the folks who are participating")....

So how can I "distract" you and "excite" your interest (Nobody noticed it? Come on!) on my next media link thread so I can get a 3-month sticky and openly flout site rules? lol

Besides, that contest was so dear to the folks in GD (and the mods, apparently) that it never would have been ended had it been reported. wink C'mon, admit it. smile

things like this have happened before.....there have been threads with flame after flame that mods hadn't noticed.....until someone reported it...we arent robots...we miss shit.

no grand conspiracy at play...when i read the thread i never once thought, "hey some of these tracks are boots...bad!!!"

and yes, if someone had reported it in a forum that i moderate, i would have snipped the links....

shrug
