Why some threads stay and some go

I find it interesting how my thread about the effects of drugs on Prince would get locked and a thread calling Bush the devil and the same as Hitler can remain forever.

I guess anti-Bush threads are okay (cuz I'm sure the mods argree with them) and anything that criticizes Prince gets a strict eye and quick closing.

WTF?

I'm sure you've noticed by now that the two of us agree on very few topics, but the one you raised in your thread was one of them. nod

I don't really understand why it was locked either. Aside from a few bumpy, dumbass posts, I thought the thread was running along pretty smoothly. smile

personally i believe some mods here are a lil no very power hungry.. and the mods who are more relaxed and light handed are pushed by the one's who think that being a org mod. is like being God.

some mods take things way to personal and either one Lock a thread, or ban a
orger, for example one orger got Banned while being in chat. whilst another one who made personal attacks in a thread got to stay.

isnt the 1st rule of any moderation to be fair and unbiased? personally i think there should be at least 1 or 2 mods who arent power hungry. i can understand if it was a paying gig. but it isnt.

just my 2 cents

i wanna echo that bout there are others that like to push the limit... its all n fun.. its not to attack anyone.... but it seems once someone has made a "enemy" they just keep on them to find a reason to go after them.... when U see other threads that are crude and just as bad.... i think to moderate you would have to take out ur personal view and look at it from a differet point of view... diversity is the key... we don't all think a like and not brought up n the same culture even... what 1 may find offensive another maynot since it is accepted in their culture..... there are many on this site from differnet walks of life.. from different corners of the world... i think we need to remember that... what is a site if one's views and ideas can not be discussed???

I always wondered how threads like...."Do you masturbate with 2 fingers or 1?" get to post whatever.

This particular thread didn't offend me...and as I post this...I'm thinking to myself that it doesn't matter.

Mod, like any other person here, are human beings, with emotions and opitions. the fact that they don't match yours, doesn't mean they're not doing their jobs right.
I'm sure there are many things they have to consider in their actions that you don't even know of. things that go in private.

I'm thankful for the mods today. They do a great job, IMO, even if it's not perfect, it's the best I can ask for, when it's volunteer work.

It seems that only complaints are posted. I say it's time to post some raves about the Mods and their hard work. They deserve a huge thank you for what they're doing. It's not an easy task, and it involves dealing with a lot of fights between orgers, dirt, and immaturity. babysitters get paid well for that kind of job, yet these Mods do it for free.
So....

So did I. And I org noted Dansa about it, but I think she hates my guts, so she didn't respond.

I think it all depends whether or not the mods like the threads or not. So it doesn't matter if people enjoy the threads and have something to contribute.

I agree, and hopefully we won't be banned for even discussing this. I feel I too was banned over more personal matters, but what's done is done.

Anyway, I just wish we could hold onto some of these threads, cuz a lot of times there's cool dialog and information on them.

That's the problem. There are so many interpretations of what's offensive and obscene around here, that it's tough to post without second guessing ourselves a million times.

Haven't been banned, but my threads were locked several times. mostly because of people who can't be nice and post some nasty things against others.

Don't forget that the meds don't see everything here, sometimes they only see what is reported to them. And even when they do see, they see it in a different eye than yours. Taste changed from one person to another. There are things that bothr you that don't bother them and the other way around. But THEY were that ones that have been chosen, meaning Ben was counting in THEIRS.

I just feel that there are many complaints about the moderator's work, and it's mostly done in public, instead of asking them in person.
That complaint could just be a misunderstanding, and instead of posting to the world that the meds suck, we should first check and make sure that they really do. And even then, try and see it in their eye, and see if it's just a matter of different taste.
For example, telling the world that Dansa hates you just because she didn't reply to a message, really lacks tact.

...okay.

from the looks of this entire thread, it's just another oh-woe-is-me-the-mods-hate-me-and-everybody-gets-their-way-save-for-me thread. for the love of reed waller, this is a WEBSITE, not a motherfuckin democracy. how many times must this stuff be told to you guys? the org IS NOT a co-op. it IS NOT your own private stomping ground. it is a mere public space provided to you by someone else (namely, ben). once you get your own website, you can do whatever you wish and say whatever you wanna say. but you're on someone else's space, and there are rules to be abided by. said rules are not totally hampering and/or stifling, and are generally easy to follow. if this ain't your bag, go elsewhere or simply turn your computer off and go do something else.

for fuck's sake, i'm 24 years old--twenty-fucking-four, ya'll--and this site is mostly comprised of people who are in their late 20s through their 40s or thereabouts, but yet n'still a lotta of those same people act like they're still in their prepubescence or their teens sometimes, and i gotta tell people to calm their shit down! half the time i feel as if i'm some sorta fuckin cyber-mother, having to tell some of ya'll shit over and over and over again, y'know. it's a gotdamned shame...and all this "power-hungry moderator" bullshit holds absolutely no water. you don't want any one of us mods on your ass? follow the site rules, act accordingly and most importantly, ACT YOUR DAMNED AGE. stay away from drama. don't start any drama. don't be a butt-head about things. it cannot get any simpler than that.

yes, people's views differ from your own. don't bitch n'moan over it if somebody ain't on the same exact page and paragraph as you are. in some cases you can actually learn from others and any situation you wind up in here.

if a thread of yours has been deleted or a comment of yours has been snipped, deal with it and don't complain about it. be adult about it. remember, a thread and/or a post that's been deleted is not the end of the gotdamned world. learn from it and move the hell on. it ain't that crucial.® also, all of us mods aren't all online at the same time and cannot possibly monitor every thread that's posted here on a 24-hour basis, but yet n'still people act as if we're supposed to.

...and lastly, all of us mods here are actually human, just like the rest of you. we're not emotionless automatons hooked to a computer. can we be as outraged as some of you? of course. the "moderator" sticker above our avatars only means that we keep an eye on the site, help out with any problems you may have and take care of anything that gets outta hand. it ain't a "power-up" button. remember, we're still mere humans too. if you cannot wrap your head around any of what i've just said, then maybe this shit will help you.

All I know is that sometimes I create threads that really take off, but soon after, bye bye. A lot of people liked the drug thread, but it wasn't sunshine and lollipops for Prince, so....

Meanwhile threads that slander our president are more than welcome around here.

Now that's quite a rant.

But let me ask you, what exactly was wrong with a thread that questioned how Prince would react inder the influence of drugs? The thread was fairly civil, outside of the Prince-ass-kissers who bitched, it stayed on-topic as much as any other thread, and the majority of people enjoyed the thread and had quite a bit to contribute.

So where was the problem with it?

Also, why do threads that slander our president to the highest degree get a green light, but one that puts Prince in not such a great light gets the red? They both made some people pissed and some were offended. So what's the difference? Why is one okay and not the other?

Well, I don't think it's the topic that is the problem, more than the way it's presented.
I haven't read those threads of yours, so I can't comment on them.
I do feel attacked at times in the P&R since I'm an Israeli, but you know what, those are opinions of people. And if they're presented here according to the site's rules, all I can do is either comment back in the same way, keeping the site's rules, or just go to another thread.
I left the website several times out of my own will, when I didn't like what was going on here, or when I just felt I needed a break. There are other forums where you can post your opinions more freely.
Nobody's the same, don't expect them to match everything to the way YOU feel is right. Either accept the differences in opinions on how the site should work, or find another site that will perfectly match yours.

Just so you'll know, I agree with some of your opinions that are posted in P&R or other forums here. More than with a lot of my closer friend's opinions, but I still feel that this site is ran by some people, with their rules, and 'when you're in Rome...'

see what i've put in boldface. there'll always be people who will disagree with you, and thus, throw your thread outta whack. when folks start to bitch, i cannot allow it to go on otherwise it'll snowball and turn into a big-assed shouting match between you and whoever thinks your thread is shite. so, it got locked to nip it in the bud before it got any worse.

folks piss on both the prez AND prince here daily. there's more than enough of both instances, and it's just silly to have the forums totally flooded with "omg like he sux"-type threads. like i noted before, if all you can muster up is negative topics without adding something positive to the foray every once in a while, then this place ain't for you.

But people start to bitch in almost every thread. For example, in the "We still have a devil in the Whitehouse" thread, quite a few people bitched in there about the topic and people's opinions, and yet the thread remains. So why wasn't that issue nipped in the bud?

How long would a thread last if it was entitled, "We still have a devil in Paisley Park?"

This is what I'm trying to understand. Two threads that both have bitching, One stays and one goes. Personally, I think all threads should remain if people enjoy posting on them. If they get out of line and start flame wars, then they should be dealth with. Some people spoil the soup by starting personal bullshit, but that will never end. So does this mean I can't create threads about Prince in the Prince forum unless I'm kissing his ass? Cuz any thread has the potential to go nuts.

I don't think the forums are flooded with "he sux" threads. Once in a while people will criticize Prince for something or come up with crazy ideas, but so what? Why does everything have to be happy time in Prince land? Isn't that what the NPGMC is for?

Also, I get criticized for creating threads for the sole purpose of wanting trouble to start. Well that's bullshit, because I really want to know what people's opinions are about certain things. I have no desire of starting trouble because I want my threads to last.

you ain't gotta kiss anybody's ass in order to participate in any forum here. you do, however, have to think before you post. and when i say think, i mean be sure you ain't gonna piss anyone off with whatever you're gonna say.

I don't think the forums are flooded with "he sux" threads. Once in a while people will criticize Prince for something or come up with crazy ideas, but so what? Why does everything have to be happy time in Prince land? Isn't that what the NPGMC is for?

EVERY prince forum has its darkside. there is no 100% 'happy la-la land' anywhere in the online community.

Also, I get criticized for creating threads for the sole purpose of wanting trouble to start. Well that's bullshit, because I really want to know what people's opinions are about certain things. I have no desire of starting trouble because I want my threads to last.

well, if that's your intention then you may just wanna carry your opinions out in a less abrasive manner then. like i said, you ain't gotta kiss no one's ass to do so. it ain't hard if you apply yourself to do it.

i think the bottom line here (and handsclaps pegged it beautifully once in this thread already) is that THIS SITE ISN'T A DEMOCRACY. it's a PRIVATE site, paid for, maintained and owned by an individual, who has in turn picked volunteers (as in, us mods) to maintain the content posted on the site.

now.

as a writer, i don't like spending time and effort posting my thoughts to a site only to have my contributions locked or deleted. EWM, i really do understand that. it's frustrating, and sometimes it feels like a slap in the face.

Yet...

THE COLD, HARD TRUTH IS:

IF YOU WANT TO PROTECT THE SANCTITY OF YOUR WORDS, CREATE YOUR OWN FORUM IN WHICH TO PRESENT THEM.

okay, let me repeat that for you:

IF YOU WANT TO PROTECT THE SANCTITY OF YOUR WORDS, CREATE YOUR OWN FORUM IN WHICH TO PRESENT THEM.

one more time, in red letters:

IF YOU WANT TO PROTECT THE SANCTITY OF YOUR WORDS, CREATE YOUR OWN FORUM IN WHICH TO PRESENT THEM.

let go of the specifics of the prince drug thread, and accept the situation on a larger, more basic scale. understand that you are not guaranteed anything here. understand that you are not entitled to anything here. as long as you understand and respect that, i think you find that those who run this site really and honestly aren't gonna be total dicks about it, either.

Okay. I think I understand now.

If a mod doesn't like the topic of a thread, it's gone.

Case solved.

yup, pretty much.

it's kinda like, if you had your own site - say, a marilynmanson.org or your own blog - and i didn't like the content of your site, then it would be tough titty for me, wouldn't it? because it's yours. you pay for it. you design it. it's your baby. and if i posted something on your site that you didn't like, you could delete my comments and hey! tough titty for me again!

i mean - is that a concept you have issue with? is it a concept you consider fundamentally wrong? i'm not trying to be antagonistic here, i really want to know.

But it's not YOUR site, is it?

I mean, did Ben put you on to keep things civil or to make your own judgements about what threads are worth keeping? In other words, did he just say, "Hey, if you personally don't like a thread for any reason, just lock it?"

My thread about Prince and drugs abided by all the rules and was not intended to offend or cause trouble. And it wasn't even plagued by troublemakers who just wanted to shut me up. It was going well, but still got locked. And all the time I hear the same shit, "Well it's in the way you present your point." My thread wasn't confrontational in the slightest. I think people just have a certain perception of me as being a rebel who wants to get people riled up. So automatically, my points are criticized.

So anyway, if this site belongs to Ben and all of you mods together, then that's the way it is.

it's not my site. not at all. ben chose me and a few others to maintain it in his absence. and if we're maintaining it in a way he doesn't like, he tells us about it and we change accordingly or, if we disagree with his direction, we quite being moderators.

and believe me - we hear from ben if we're doing something wrong.

so: if you have a problem with your drug-prince thread getting locked, which it seems likely that you do, perhaps you should air your grievances directly to ben, if you haven't already.
