Are all of the org's former controversial people still here?

I have noticed that some of the org's former shit stirrers, like IceNine, Aaron, and others seem to still be here under other names. Have you noticed that? I noticed this because it seems that there is still some serious racist overtones and such here.

Why do you think Aaron is racist?

How is this thread sillier than IceNine being allowed back on the site? If he is, then I expect 2the9s to be allowed back tomorrow. Thank you smile

Why do you think Aaron is racist?

That's ridiculous. But what I want to know is why this person thinks Aaron is here. I know Aaron better than anyone on this site, and I would be able to smell him from a mile away. I've not picked up his stench in a very long time.

Come on folks, we're not holding the Org doors open and selectively waving banned Orgers back in. There are many screenames coming in from banned orgers that are literally nuked on sight. Yes, people may slip by once in a while, but the moment they start up the same conduct that got them banned in the first place, it's gonna wave a red flag.

What's worse, is the paranoid witchhunts that continue to go on here, long after the problem-orger has been banned.

If you suspect a banned orger has come back, and feel that we haven't picked up on it yet, shoot us over an orgnote and explain why. Yes, we have a few extra tools at our disposal to help us determine whos who, but we're not the FBI.

IP addresses can be useful when trying to identify multiple accounts, but they're often insufficient. Most people have "dynamic" IP addresses that change (or, at least, can change). People with dialup accounts usually get a new IP address every time they connect to the Internet. Some ISP's even use proxy servers that cause a user's IP address to keep changing during the same connection.

Even if we can trace multiple IP addresses back to the same ISP, that won't help us much if it's a large ISP. For example, knowing that account X and account Y both use AOL to access the .org is hardly proof that X and Y are the same person.

We do have other ways of identifying alias accounts. However, those methods aren't foolproof. As Tom said, if you have reason to believe that an account is being used by a banned person, please help us out and let us know. Thanks! smile

Oh, it's out in the open now. A lot of Orgers know who's back from the dead, so there's no reason to believe that at least some moderators don't.

And I'm not referring to Aaron.

There really isn't any easy way to stop people from accessing the site if they really want to. As Matt points out, tracking IP addresses is practically useless. You can look for other patterns - patterns in style, language, posting times etc, but it's all guesswork and hardly worth the effort.

So - since it is not realistically enforcable, I think notions of any "permanent ban" are probably not worth considering.

Anyway, some of my all-time favourite Orgers have been considered "controversial" orgers at one time or another. They bring a bit of life to the place, a bit of drama to discussions. Personally, as long as the place doesn't completely descend into abuse and fighting, I'd welcome any of the "persona non grata" folk back.

people can use other people's accounts. people can take over other people's accounts. someone could disagree with the banning of a particular orger, and they'll decide to share their account with that banned person. it's been known to happen.

unless i'm physically sitting next to you, i have no idea who's using your account.

Yes, I know. And I really don't want to drag this on and on, seeing as how I wasn't even the one to bring the subject up. I'm just saying some of the mods saw fit to ban (or deactivate) people left and right when they wanted to, and real quick. There was never any ifs/ands/or buts...but now...

yeah, and i guess as a relative newbie who's only ever banned one person (not including althom, who JUST KEEPS COMING BACK), i shouldn't speak for those mods. but by the same token, i've had hunches about certain new orgers being certain old banned orgers, and i was wrong. i've had other hunches where i was right. i've had hunches that were supported by our mod software tools. and i have other hunches that i'm sure are right, but i'd better be damn well sure before i act on 'em. and i think the other mods feel the same way.

i know what the rumors are. and i know i'm not the only mod who's aware. if you think we don't have an eye on what's going on, you've got another thing coming. my moderator mentor isn't barney fife for nothin', ya know. smile

nod AMEN! It's awesome to read what Anx said, and I feel so darn yay! when I know the mods have their eyes open. That's one of the biggest benefits of there being a larger number of mods I feel, that more things/people can be observed and taken care of. woot!
